A few days ago, Derek Yu, President of Huawei CB for Central and Eastern Europe, Northern, Canada & Turkey gave an interview. He told to the journalists that HarmonyOS will land in Europe next year.
HarmonyOS Is Gaining Momentum
As of December 2, 2021, Huawei announced that 135 devices already run on the HarmonyOS 2, 6 devices were being tested and recruited, and the number of various upgraded devices has exceeded 150 million.
However, it is a pity that Huawei HarmonyOS 2 is currently only for Chinese devices. Most global models still run Android’s EMUI. Many small partners are also very concerned about this. Looking at it now, Huawei may gradually introduce HarmonyOS to global markets from next year.
Why not use 5G chips like previous models?
Derek Yu said that they are working hard to establish partnerships with Qualcomm, Intel and Microsoft to ensure that they can have the necessary reserves. Moreover, Huawei still thinks that 4G is currently sufficient for European consumers. 5G is technically stronger. But it’s difficult to find a mobile phone usage scenario that is completely different for 5G and 4G networks.
Gizchina News of the week
How about Huawei’s flagship smartphone market segment in Europe?
Huawei is going to continue working on flagship phones, especially folding models, as well as Mate and P series. Moreover, the Shanghai Research and Development (R&D) Center is studying 5G chips. So one day all Huawei flagships will support 5G again.
What is the biggest challenge you have ever faced? How did you overcome it?
“I think the biggest challenge is to overcome the situation where the dream is impossible to realize. I still remember 2019, and I will never forget the day of May 16, when we knew nothing about the sudden ban. On May 19th, Google officially notified us that we can no longer use their service (GMS).
Within the company, we still hope that one day we can win back GMS. Even in the nearly 7 months of 2019, we did not take action. We only discussed internally how to take over GMS. Some people thought that raising the price could solve the problem but still did not take action.”
Later that year, Huawei CEO had a meeting with team members saying “forget GMS and go to HMS! Why should we be sanctioned? Not because of 5G, but because they wanted to kill Huawei.”
This was the time when Huawei understood they hadn’t made a mistake. They were awakened from a dream and began to think about how to build their own HMS. But it’s now reality. Moreover, in the coming years, HarmonyOS will benchmark iOS and Android.
TY for the story of Huawei ban, very interesting.
