Way back in March, Xiaomi surprised the world with the Mi Mix Fold. The company’s first foldable smartphone marked the return of this iconic series of smartphones with gorgeous displays and high-end specifications. However, the device never left the Chinese market and global customers couldn’t do much besides watching the device from a distance. Despite the limited availability, the device was quite successful, and the company is preparing a second iteration for the handset. According to reports, the tentatively named Mi Mix Fold 2 will launch sometime in Q2 or Q3 2022 and will use Samsung’s innovative UTG solution.
According to fresh rumors, Xiaomi’s upcoming foldable smartphone will use a Samsung-made internal folding screen. It will boast Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) on top. This solution is currently found in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 and also in the recently released Oppo Find N. For starters, UTG will ensure flexibility and durability by injecting special materials into a sheet of glass that’s only 30 micros thick during processing. It’s much thinner than traditional smartphone display glass.

The thinness of the display is the secret behind its flexibility. Although it does not bring the same endurance as a Gorilla Glass display, it still is more durable than other materials. Samsung has improved this technology in the past few years. Seeing other companies’ interests shows that the Korean firm has made the needed advancements. The latest UTG solution of the Galaxy Z Fold3 is even capable of supporting the S Pen stylus, something that was not possible with previous iterations of UTG.
Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold 2 alleged specifications
According to early rumors, the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold 2 will pack an internal screen size of 8.1-inches. The panel may also bring high-refresh-rate support. Since Samsung is the supplier, we can bet on a 120 Hz LTPO refresh rate which allows the screen to go from 1 Hz to 120 Hz dynamically. Moreover, Xiaomi is preparing a new hinge that will be a big upgrade over its predecessor.
We don’t know much about the hardware, but it seems that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is a reasonable guess for the handset. It should also bring a powerful camera combo and a large battery. The Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold 2 could be launched alongside the Xiaomi 12 Ultra. This variant is not coming with the Xiaomi 12 series in the next week. Hopefully, this new foldable model won’t stay in China forever.
