Social media app TikTok has officially beaten Google to become the most popular domain on a worldwide basis in 2021, with the company ending the year on a rather happy note, finishing with more traffic than Google.
This information comes to us via web security firm Cloudware who have done their top domain ranking for 2021, with some rather interesting results for the year.
Cloudflare’s latest Year in Review report, which comes via the Cloudflare Radar service, suggests that TikTok has clinched the No. 1 spot from Google. For the popular video music application, this is a meteoric rise in ranking in comparison to 2020, when it was just 7th, with Google on top.
TikTok is 2021’s Most Visited Website!
Do note that Google’s domains also contain data in relation to other web activities, be it Maps, News, Books, Flights, Photos and Google’s famous Google Translate.
Furthermore, TikTok has also overtaken Facebook as the most popular social media platform, with Meta ranking third in 2021. Microsoft has dipped below Facebook, with the company ahead of the likes of Apple, Amazon, Netflix, YouTube, Twitter, and WhatsApp.
This is not really a surprise to us, since the platform rose to fame during the pandemic, when people were stuck in their homes, looking for sources of entertainment.
Gizchina News of the week
Back in September, the platform crossed over 1 billion active users per month and managed to edge out Facebook as the most downloaded app on mobile devices across the world.
What Else Do We Know About the Platform?
Cloudflare adds that TikTok also took the No.1 spot for a couple of days in the month of February, March, and May. However, the service secured the top spot regularly after August.
“There were some days when Google was #1, but October and November were mostly TikTok’s days, including on Thanksgiving (November 25) and Black Friday (November 26),” Cloudflare mentions.
The blog adds: “It was on February 17, 2021, that TikTok got the top spot for a day. Back in March, TikTok got a few more days and also in May, but it was after August 10, 2021, that TikTok took the lead on most days.”

Cloudflare does note that its “ranking is derived from our public DNS resolver 1.1.1.1 and so it’s not related to the number of unique users or visitors it gets per month.”
