In Apple’s view, everyone should upgrade the iOS 15 update as soon as possible. The company claims that this system is the safest for all iPhones as of now. The iOS 15 has the latest security update which other systems do not have. This is why the company wants iPhone users to migrate to iOS 15. Apple patched two critical security flaws with the release of iOS 15 that could potentially expose users’ private information. These flaws can expose Apple ID information and in-app search history to malicious third-party apps. It also allows apps to override users’ privacy preferences. However, the iOS 15 update takes care of these issues.
iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and watchOS 8.0 also patch a security flaw that could allow third-party apps to bypass privacy preferences. According to Apple, more than 72% of all iPhones released in the past four years have iOS 15 installed. However, the installation rate of the iPadOS 15 is much lower at 57%. The adoption rate of iOS 15 is significantly lower than iOS 14, which is installed on more than 80% of all iPhones over the past four years. Even iOS 13 has seen faster adoption than iOS 15, as it was installed on 77% of iPhones as of January 2020.
Gizchina News of the week
As new security flaws in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 and iOS 15.1 and iPadOS 15.1 are patched, users are strongly advised to update to the latest iOS and iPadOS versions. Apple is currently testing iOS 15.3 and iPadOS 15.3 with the public and developer testers. The latest public versions are iOS 15.2.1 and iPadOS 15.2.1.
In addition, Apple pushed the iOS/iPadOS 15.3 RC update (build number: 19D49) to iPhone and iPad users today. This update comes with a fix for the Safari bug.
Safari browser vulnerability leaks Apple user data
Over the weekend, there were reports that a bug in the Safari browser’s WebKit engine could allow websites to track users’ browsing history. Furthermore, this bug also allows websites to identify information through the browser. Simply put, the bug exposes the user’s identity through the Safari browser.
Now, there is an official response from Apple regarding this issue. WebKit submission information shows that Apple now provides a fix for this bug. However, the company is yet to release this update to users because Apple wants to add this solution to the new version updates of macOS Monterey, iOS 15, and iPadOS 15.
It is important to note that WebKit is an open-source engine for Apple’s browser. Since Apple requires Chrome and Edge browsers on iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 to use this engine, users who are not using the Safari browser may also be affected by this. Users of lower versions of iOS do not need to worry, this problem only exists in iOS 15 and later.
