Intel will build a new chipset mega-site in Ohio

Intel has been increasing its efforts in recent years when it comes to its chipset manufacturing. The company lost a big client in 2020 with Apple moving to ARM-based processors with their in-house Apple M1. Although the company still has a good margin of the market of computers, it is preparing new advancements to keep users interested. According to rumors, the company is preparing new chips with more advanced manufacturing processes and a set of technologies. These chips will be manufactured on a large scale, and therefore, the company is improving its manufacturing capability. The company will reportedly build a large-scale chipset production plant in New Albany, Ohio (United States).

Intel will improve its manufacturing capabilities

The new manufacturing chipset will become the largest semiconductor project in the world. According to the report, the company will start with an initial investment of around $20 billion. The construction might start later this year with plans to open it definitively by 2025. That’s still a long way to go before seeing the first fruits of this investment, but again, this is the kind of investment that will put Intel forward in manufacturing. It’s pretty much a smart move, especially in times when companies are suffering due to limited chip manufacturing capacities.

The mega-site will span over 400 hectares and will initially house two chip factories with plans to expand up to eight fabs in the future. The complex will also support operations and other Intel partner ecosystems. This is also another smart move since Intel wants to strengthen its bonds with other companies.

Investment also plays a good role in the country’s overall economy. For instance, the initial estimates point to around 3,000 jobs being generated by Intel. Moreover, it will generate countless construction jobs and long-term opportunities. Intel is also devoting an additional $100 million to partner with local Ohio educational Institutions. The goal here is to help mentor and develop local talent and to bring research programs through the entire state.

The company’s move does not come as a mere coincidence. If you recall, other companies like TSMC and Samsung have also announced plans for chipset plants in the US. These will be set in other states like Arizona and Texas. All companies in the chipset segment are trying to expand their manufacturing capabilities. The entire sector took a big hit since 2020 and is still suffering in 2022 with the continuous constraints in manufacturing.
