How Much Memory Do Android Smartphones Need?

Android smartphones

Apple’s iPhone doesn’t look attractive when compared with Android phones. We mean the specs on the paper. For instance, the iPhone 13 Pro Max, which is the toppest flagship on the market, still uses 6GB memory. Generally, the current iPhones still sport either 4GB or 6GB RAM. We can say the same for the camera as well. This model is equipped with a triple-camera on the back and they all have 12MP resolution only. At the same time, there are many Android smartphones powered by 18GB RAM. And we are not talking about their cameras that already reached three 64MP sensors.

After getting acquainted with such information, what do you think about how much memory does your Android phone actually need? We can paraphrase this question – does your smartphone need a large memory?

We understand that Android smartphones come with large memories because this niche is very competitive. So the manufacturers try to put as many outstanding features as possible. In this sense, the Apple iPhone doesn’t have such a goal. There is no other similar product that can make competition with the iPhone. OnePlus has been trying to grab some market share. But it failed.

Moreover, Android applications often occupy a lot of memory. So when looking for Android-powered smartphones, customers often pay attention to features like this.

In response to the question of how much memory capacity an Android phone needs, @Gary Explains from AndroidAuthority compared the experience of phones with different memory capacities. For comparison, he chose the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra with 12GB memory, the OnePlus 9 Pro with 8GB RAM, and the Google Pixel 3XL with 4GB memory.

Apps and Games Used in Test

  • Subway Surfers — 750MB
  • 1945 Airforce — 850MB
  • Candy Crush — 350MB
  • Brawl Stars — 500MB
  • Minecraft — 800MB
  • Asphalt 9 — 800MB
  • Shadowgun Legends — 900MB
  • Elder Scrolls Blades — 950MB
  • Genshin Impact — 1.4GB
  • Chrome — 2.2GB

The applications and games he uses range from 350MB to 2GB memory. Chrome is also a big memory user on Android phones and can occupy 2.2GB of memory.

In the end, he came to the conclusion that for current Android phones, 6GB is the lowest capacity, 8GB is a moderate choice, and 12GB of memory can satisfy users who use a large number of programs at the same time.

“No matter how much RAM your device has, it’s a finite resource that can run out. This is where swap space comes in.”

The author also added that “8GB-12GB RAM is ideal, while 16GB seems to be nothing more than just bragging rights.”
