The much-awaited JioPhone 5G smartphone’s India launch timeline and specifications have been tipped, courtesy of a new leak. Jio has more than 420 million subscribers, making it India’s largest cellular network by a considerable margin. Last year, the Indian telecommunications giant collaborated with Google to launch a budget smartphone dubbed, the JioPhone Next. The device runs customized Android OS and carries an affordable price tag of INR 6,499 (about $87) in India.

In 2022, Jio is adopting 5G connectivity to set its phone apart from similar devices available in the market. The company is currently hard at work on its first-ever 5G-ready phone that carries the JioPhone 5G moniker. The steeply-priced phones sold in India, feature a 5G modem. However, there’s no 5G service. So, Jio is bent on changing that in 2022 by bringing 5G connectivity to major cities in the country. Furthermore, the company will be trying to align the affordable JioPhone 5G phone’s India launch with the rollout of its 5G service.
JioPhone 5G Specifications (Rumored)
A source has confirmed key details about the upcoming JioPhone 5G hardware specifications and software to Android Central. The most notable feature of the upcoming Jio phone will be its 5G connectivity support. Aside from that, the handset boasts an array of sufficiently good features and specs. For instance, it packs Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 480 5G chipset under the hood. This is a notable upgrade over the JioPhone Next’s Snapdragon 215 chipset.

Moreover, the company’s maiden 5G phone will sport a larger screen compared to the JioPhone Next. The JioPhone 5G will feature a 6.5-inch display, but it will deliver the same HD+ resolution of 1600 x 720 pixels. In terms of memory and storage capacity, the handset will ship with 4GB of RAM and offer 32GB of onboard storage. Moreover, the phone will feature a microSD card that will enable users to expand this built-in storage capacity. Also, it will run a customized version of Android 11 OS just like the JioPhone Next.
Other key features include the read-aloud text feature, Google Assistant support, and the ability to translate via Google Translate and Google Lens. Moreover, it will come with a slew of apps like JioSaavan, JioCinema, JioTV, and MyJio. In the photography department, the phone will house a dual rear camera setup. This includes a 13MP main camera, as well as a 2MP macro sensor. Upfront, the phone will feature an 8MP shooter for selfies and video calling. Also, a 5000mAh battery with 18W fast charging support will be powering up the phone.
In terms of connectivity, the JioPhone 5G offers options like dual-SIM card support, NavIC, 5G, GLONASS, A-GPS, Bluetooth 5.1, and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n. Furthermore, the phone will reportedly adopt a modern design, featuring slim bezels at the top and bottom, round edges, and a hole-punch cutout. According to the publication, the JioPhone 5G is currently in the prototyping stage. Also, Jio could launch several SKUs under its first 5G-enabled handset.
