Netflix users in the U.K. and Ireland have to brace themselves up for an increase in what they pay. The company did not exactly announce why it is increasing the subscription plans. However, in a statement, the company claims that the increase will allow it to “continue investing in best in class UK productions and offer a wide variety of curated quality shows and films”.
Here are the new prices for the Netflix packages in the U.K. and Ireland
Standard Package
- Increases by £1 ($1.31) to £10.99 ($14.46) in the UK
- Increase by €2 ($2.20) to €14.99 ($16.54) in Ireland
Basic Package
Netflix is not known for increasing the price of its basic package, however, not this time. The current increase is the first increase of Netflix’s basic package in 10 years in the U.K. In Ireland, this is the first increase to the basic package in eight years
- Increases by £1 ($1.31) to £6.99 ($9.19) in the UK
- Increases by €1 ($1.10) to €8.99 ($9.92) in Ireland
Premium Package
- Increases by £2 ($2.63) in the UK
- Increases by €2 ($2.20) in Ireland
All new members of Netflix will have to pay the new prices effective immediately. However, for existing members, they will get a 30 days notification before the new fee comes into effect.

Besides Canada and the U.S., the U.K. is Netflix’s biggest production hub. The streaming service has a $1 billion content budget for 2020 and created over 10,000 jobs for cast and crew. Using its Grow Creative program, Netflix will also invest £1.2 million ($1.58 million) in the UK crew and talent pipeline.
Netflix in the U.K. and Ireland now includes popular shows like The Crown, Bridgerton, Emily In Paris, The Hand Of God, and The Power Of The Dog.
Defending the price increase, Netflix convinced members that there will be no additional charges or hidden costs. Once you pay the subscription fees, you will have access to the entire content library. Netflix has some new features such as “Play Something”, “Fast Laughs” and others that make the service better. These features have different services that they offer. A Netflix spokesperson said in a statement
“We have always been focused on providing our members both quality and clear value for their membership,”…“Our updated prices reflect the investment we have made in our service and catalog and will allow us to continue making the series, documentaries, and films our members love as well as investing in talent and the creative industry. We offer a range of plans so members can choose a price that works best for them.”
