GoogleĀ launched a “performance level” concept in Android 12. Developers can query the hardware information of the device, so as to classify the device into different performance levels. On devices with lower performance levels, developers can choose to turn off some features or reduce some animations. This will enable the device to run better and more smoothly.
Google recently launched anĀ alpha version of the Jetpack Core Performance library. This lets apps “get device performance ratings on devices runningĀ Android 11 (API level 30) and higher”. The highest performance level presently is Level 12 and there are some requirements to be at that level. Furthermore, according to Google, there are only a handful of devices on Level 12
Performance Level 12 requirements are:
- At least 6GB RAM
- At least 400dpi and 1080p resolution screen
- No less than 120MB/s sequential writes, 250MB/s sequential reads, 10MB/s random writes, and 40MB/s random reads
- Must have (at least) a 12MP rear camera capable of recording at 4K 30 FPS
- Must have (at least) a 4MP front-facing camera capable of recording at 1080p 30 FPS
Google said that flagship devices from manufacturers such as Oppo, OnePlus, Realme, Vivo, and Xiaomi meet the Media Performance Class 12 requirements and can be the first to be optimized. The Level 12 (or Class 12) devices are
- OnePlus 10 Pro
- OPPO Find X3 Pro
- Realme GT 2 Pro
- Vivo X60 Pro+
- Vivo X70 Pro+
- Xiaomi 12
- Xiaomi 12 Pro
- Google Pixel 6
- Google Pixel 6 Pro
Performance Level 11
For the lower Level 11 (or Class 11), here are the requirements:
- At least 6GB RAM
- No less than 400dpi and 1080p resolution screen
- At least 100MB/s sequential write, 200MB/s sequential read, 10MB/s random write, and 25MB/s random read speed
- Must have (at least) a 12MP rear camera capable of recording at 4K 30 FPS
- Must have (at least) a 4MP front-facing camera capable of recording at 1080p 30 FPS
The Samsung Galaxy S22 series, as a newly released flagship, did not appear on the list.Ā According to the screenshots posted by 9To5Google, the Galaxy S22+ does not support performance levels. This may be because Samsung is not so active in adapting to Google’s Android requirements. For example, it has never supported seamless updates.
Preview of the Level 12 devices
The Level 12 devices listed above do not mean that any of those smartphones perform better than the other. The smartphones are not listed in other of performance. However, they all have the top Android performance level.
