Messenger mimics Slack by integrating shortcuts to control messages

While some competitive features are still pending on Messenger, such as end-to-end encryption recently postponed to 2023, Meta continues to improve its application by regularly integrating new features. In addition to all the features offered by the latter, it is the messages that deserve the most attention from the developers. After sending flash messages added in 2021, they are now inspired by their competitors.

Indeed, Meta presents in its latest blog post several shortcuts that integrate its application today. Just like Slack already allows, just write these shortcuts in the text bar to perform a specific action. In other words, the manipulation is similar to that of typing @ followed by the name of the person concerned to notify them specifically and therefore makes it possible to obtain other results.

In addition, this functionality has been somewhat extended since it is now possible to enter @everyone in a conversation to send a notification to all these participants, like Slack or Discord. Conversely, the /silent shortcut allows you to send a message without the contact(s) being notified before opening the chat.

Moreover, it will be possible to add a GIF more quickly thanks to the command /gif. Other shortcuts are also available, such as /shrug and /tableflip, which make writing associated emojis faster. This feature will eventually be available to all Messenger users, on Android and iOS.

Meta says the rollout has already began and will take a few weeks. At the time of writing this article, we have been able to verify that the shortcuts are not yet available on Android 12 in all countries.

Meta has recently updated its proprietary instant messaging app Messenger with a range of new features. These include the ability to split bills, disappearing messages, and new options for easier voice message management. Innovations are available in the iOS and Android Messenger app.

Account splitting is currently only available to users in the United States. It can be in use in group chats, equally share, for example, the bill for dinner in a restaurant. In addition, users will be able to separately set the amount that each person owes. The function allows you to connect your payment details for a quick money transfer directly through Messenger.

Users from all over the world got access to the “Disappearance” mode. To activate it, you need to open any of the existing chats and swipe up. In Disappear mode, all messages, including GIFs and stickers, will delete after reading by the recipient. In order to return to a regular chat, just swipe up again in the conversation window.
