Tech council wants to attract more tech talent to Canada

Canada

The Council of Canadian Innovators (CCI) is expanding its efforts to attract more foreign tech talent over to the country. The council is calling for the federal government to introduce a High Potential Tech Visa. The goal is to give in-demand tech professionals a strong road to Canada, even without a job offer in hand. According to reports, the council is facing a critical shortage of skilled talent in the technological segment. It has made so far 13 key recommendations for policymakers to support Canada’s growing tech industry.

The report states, that Canada expects employment in the digital economy to represent around 11 percent of all employment in Canada by 2025. The latest report is another advancement made to ease the road to Canada.

“Thee need for skilled tech workers is most acute at scale-up companies. However, the growth in the digital economy at large will trigger demand for an additional 250,000 jobs. Canada’s current workforce can’t meet this demand.”

As per the report, the proposed visa aims at the high-skilled tech talent from foreign countries. The goal is to make Canada more attractive and an easy place to go for foreign software developers, engineers, and data scientists. Currently, Canada’s immigration system requires most people seeking work visas to have a valid job offer to qualify. The Council states that this stands as an unnecessary barrier between high-skilled tech talent who want to set up a life and career in Canada.

Previously, Canadian Immigration Minister Sean Fraser previously said the Canadian government hopes to give international students an easy pathway to establish permanent residency in the country. Moreover, he states that the immigration and arrival of international students have been greatly enhancing the country’s economy.

“Our message to international students and graduates is simple”.“We don’t just want you to study here. We’re hoping to create pathways that allow you to stay here and make a lasting contribution beyond your academic career.”

According to Fraser, the country is working on “policy matters, so it may take a little bit of time”. However, he says that “It’ll allow people to better plan their succession to reach Canada to study and then after they’re done to transition to permanent residency.”

We’ve been seeing the advancement of technologies in many countries such as the Philippines, to control important sectors. It’s natural to see Canada trying to recruit talent to aprimorate the country and boost the digital segment.
