Garmin has just announced a new fitness band that carries the vivosmart 5 monikers. The popular wearable company wants to try its luck with a new smartband featuring an OLED display. Interestingly, this display has just 0.73-inch. However, it is still larger than the previous model which had a 0.41-inch screen. The wearable packs a 88 x 154 pixels resolution, but you probably won’t have issues with that, after all, the display is so tiny. Of course, putting a super large panel on a device that wants to pass as a band, would be overkill. Let’s see what the Garmin vivosmart 5 has in tow to conquer enthusiasts of the brand and also those looking for a good wearable – fitness tracker.
Garmin vivosmart 5 specs and features
The Garmin vivosmart 5 features the usual set of health-oriented features and fitness tracking. For instance, users will find the usual heart rate monitoring. It will track your heart rate 24 hours per day and seven days per week. It can also monitor the quality of your sleep. There is also an activity tracker and a pedometer. Interestingly, there are some regions that will offer a SpO2 sensor. This feature had its biggest demand in the first years of the pandemic. Now, it has become a standard feature for smart wearables. The SpO2 can also detect your stress levels, and following new tendencies has a menstrual cycle tracker for women. The only drawback is the region dependency. We’re not sure why Garmin is not bringing this to everyone.
Gizchina News of the week
The Garmin vivosmart 5 features a Fitness Age feature. It will check your chronological age, weekly vigorous activity, resting heart rate, and BMI to estimate if your body is younger or older than you actually are. There is also a safety and tracking feature for select outdoor activities. It allows the users to send assistance alerts to their emergency contacts at the press of a button through a text message, which includes your live location obtained using the connected phone’s GPS. This seriously is an interesting feature. Unfortunately, it would be even more useful if the device had an integrated GPS. You still need to have your smartphone around to send the location.
The Garmin vivosmart 5 highlights include smart notification alerts (for calls / SMS / apps) and 5 ATM water resistance. So you can even take it for a shower or a swim. In terms of battery life, the company says that it won’t disappoint you. The Garmin vivosmart 5 can offer around seven days of endurance without blood oxygen tracking during sleep. Unfortunately, the company didn’t reveal the exact size of this battery.
Pricing and Availability
The Garmin vivostmart 5 comes with a polycarbonate case which is an interchangeable case. There are options in White, Black, and Cool Mint colors. Furthermore, there are three sizes-small, medium, and large. The device is compatible with Android and iOS devices and costs around $150 in the United States.
For now, it’s unclear if the wearable will reach other markets. Earlier this year, Garmin launched the Venu 2 Plus in India and the new Fenix and Epix lineup.
