ZTE Axon 40 Ultra released – perfect full-screen & first in many regards

After a series of leaks and speculations regarding the upcoming ZTE flagships, the company has officially released the ZTE Axon 40 series. This series has the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra as well as the Axon 40 Pro. However, we look at the Axon 40 Ultra in this article. This flagship smartphone debuts the third-generation under-screen camera technology. This is one of its major selling points and it is also the third under-screen camera flagship of the ZTE Axon series. Different from the one-drive multi-scheme by the competition, ZTE Axon 40 Ultra is the world’s first one-drive-one scheme.

In terms of price, ZTE Axon 40 Ultra has different options and the prices are also different. This smartphone will officially hit the market for sales on May 13. Here are the prices for the different models

  • 8GB + 256GB – 4998 yuan ($743)
  • 12GB + 256GB – 5298 yuan ($788)
  • 12GB + 512GB – 5798 yuan ($862)
  • 16GB + 1TB – 7298 yuan ($1,085)

Specifically, ZTE Axon 40 Ultra has a 1-drive 1-pixel circuit design. This can improve the pixel density of the camera area and the pixel drive circuit without reducing the pixel density of the camera area. The visible light transmittance increases the amount of light entering the camera under the screen. Furthermore, it improves the photo effect and realizes a true full-screen display with high resolution.

There is no doubt that this is the most perfect under-screen camera solution. Ni Fei, President of ZTE’s Terminal Business Unit, said that ZTE Axon 40 Ultra is a very imaginative product that integrates the latest under-screen camera technology, multi-camera fusion computing photography, and top flagship performance, making it a candy bar flagship.

In terms of colour matching, the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra mobile phone has two options – black and grey. It has a thickness of 8.41mm and a weight of only 204 grams.

Goodbye notch and punch-hole – ZTE Axon 40 Ultra has a perfect under-screen camera solution

Are smartphone users tired of the same notch screen and punch-hole screen phones? Now the ultimate “candy bar flagship” is here. The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra not only upgrades to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC but also uses a 3-channel 64-megapixel 8K sensor, 5000 mAh battery and 80W fast charge.

ZTE is one of the first mobile phone brands to use under-screen camera technology. This time, the Axon 40 Ultra uses an independent pixel one-drive-one technology in the industry. One pixel circuit drives one-pixel unit so that each pixel can be controlled independently. Eliminating the edge aliasing effect not only achieves an ultra-fine display effect of 400PPI, but also ensures a full-screen brightness difference of less than 2%, and the front display is seamless. It is the most perfect full-screen solution so far.

This device will also come with a self-developed pro-photography algorithm 3.0. Furthermore, it will use a front-facing 16-megapixel lens and a large 2.24μm fusion pixel.

Display & hardware

In addition to the eye-catching under-screen camera technology, the Axon 40 Ultra phone also uses a curved screen design. The display has a relatively large curvature, which can achieve a borderless visual effect on both sides. The upper and lower borders are also very narrow which gives this device a really good display effect.

Axon 40 Ultra

ZTE is one of the first mobile phone brands to launch a triple main camera technology. All three lenses are 64MP, and the rear main camera adopts the same 64MP as the Nubia Z40 Pro. The camera is the Sony IMX787 sensor and the photosensitive unit reaches 1/1.73 inches. Also, the single-pixel size is 0.8μm while the equivalent focal length is 35mm. The main camera supports all-pixel omnidirectional focusing and OIS.

The ultra-wide-angle lens uses the same IMX787 free-form surface lens as the main camera, with a 16mm equivalent focal length. The periscope telephoto uses a 64MP OmniVision OV64B sensor, a 1/2 -inch photosensitive unit, and an equivalent focal length of 91mm. It also supports OIS and achieves an overall optical zoom range of 5.7 times.

In addition to higher pixels, ZTE also claims that the Axon 40 Ultra is the industry’s first dual Sony IMX787 sensor. It uses a dual full-pixel omnidirectional focusing and the focusing speed and reliability significantly improve. It can detect data in all directions so that all pixels on the photosensitive element can participate in focusing. This is the fastest and most accurate focusing technology at present.

In addition, the Axon 40 Ultra also has five uniques in the industry, they include

  • Triple main cameras that can perform lightning snapshots
  • Main cameras can shoot 8K video
  • Triple main cameras support preset focus
  • Triple main cameras are dual Sony cameras
  • Dual all-pixel omnidirectional focus
