Samsung creates a special series of chips for its flagships

In April, it was rumored online that Samsung Electronics was creating a proprietary chip that would be exclusive to Galaxy smartphones. Recently, The Korea Economic Daily confirmed this information and announced that it will appear in mobile devices that will debut in 2025.

The design of the new chip will be completed in 2023 and the key focus will be on software and hardware optimization. The new chip will focus exclusively on top-level models and, apparently, it will not become part of the Exynos series. What prevented the company from creating some kind of exclusive processor remains a mystery. It is also not very clear why so much attention is paid to this system on a chip, given that Samsung has been producing its single-chip systems for quite some time.

According to The Korea Economic Daily, Samsung could take on the creation of a new top-end processor due to the fact that the reputation of Exynos chips was badly shaken. So, last month, about 2000 users united in order to send a class action lawsuit against Samsung. In it, they accused the company of forcibly reducing the performance of a large number of applications; due to incorrect operation of the Samsung Game Optimizing Service (GOS). The company itself explains this by concern for normal temperature conditions and attempts to reduce the risk of overheating.

Samsung attempt to get rid of the notoriety of Exynos chips

Recall that earlier Samsung announced its ambitions to become the number one company in the semiconductor market. It gave itself until 2030 to reach the top. But before the implementation of the plan, the company still has a lot to do. So, according to analysts, last year the share of Samsung chips in the market was only 6.6% against 14% in 2019.

Chipsets Shortage

In separate news, Samsung Electronics has released a white paper; outlining its vision for securing global frequency bands for 6G, the next-generation communications technology.

In the paper, the company discusses how to obtain the spectrum needed to fulfill the company’s vision for 6G. Various telecommunications giants are gradually starting; to expand the development of technologies for 6G, but so far all this is in the initial stages.

6G will require a spectrum with ultra-wideband contiguous bandwidth ranging from hundreds of megahertz to tens of gigahertz; to enable new solutions such as high-quality mobile holograms and augmented reality; which requires ultra-high-speed communication and large amounts of data. In response to these demands, Samsung proposes considering all available bands for 6G; from the lower sub-1 GHz band to the mid-range 1-24 GHz and the upper band 24-300 GHz.

The sub-terahertz band is a spectrum candidate for 6G communications; which w expect to support data rates up to 1 Tbps; which is 50 times faster than 20 Gbps in 5G networks.

Samsung plans to share more details and results of its 6G research at the first Samsung 6G forum scheduled for May 13th.
