Microsoft Edge will soon have a new practical feature called Drop. It will allow users to transfer their files to other devices on which the internet browser is available.
Over the years, Microsoft Edge has acquired many additional features and the work of the American giant has obviously paid off since Edge has become the second most used browser in the world. As of early May 2022, Edge offers a built-in free VPN, although it remains less effective than a classic VPN.
However, the next new feature to come to Edge will concern file sharing. Currently, we have solutions to transfer files from one device to another. Generally, users send their files by email or opt for Google Drive, which recently also allows you to use keyboard shortcuts to copy, cut and paste.
Microsoft intends to offer another alternative to its users. As revealed by our colleagues from the Neowin site, the American manufacturer is working on a native function that will allow files to be shared between your devices where the browser is installed.
Called Drop, it will take the form of a side panel in which it will be possible to drag and drop your notes and files to switch them to your Android smartphone for example. Of course, your Microsoft Edge account will need to be logged in on both devices for the operation to work.

Note that the Drop function appears to be based on OneDrive, Microsoft‘s cloud storage solution. Indeed, we notice in the column the amount of occupied and free space remaining. Additionally, Drop displays a QR Code to download the mobile version of Edge; in case you are not yet using the browser on your smartphone. Unfortunately, it’s impossible for the average user to try Drop at this time.
This is because the feature is only available to users of Edge Canary 104; the latest developer-only version of the browser. Nevertheless, and as the screenshots shared for Neowin show; if you are in this specific case, you can activate Drop from the Appearance tab in the browser Settings.
Microsoft is also testing a feature to import data from the Google Chrome browser into its Microsoft Edge every time the user launch the browser. At the same time, you can choose which elements to import. It includes bookmarks, browsing history, saved passwords, cookies, open tabs, and even browser settings.
