Google announced today (14) the official arrival of Google Duplex in Brazil. The technology uses artificial intelligence and natural language to automate everyday tasks. It includes small things such as scheduling phone appointments and updating records, for example. The good news was revealed during a Google event held in Brazil. According to Fabio Coelho, the president of the company in the country, Duplex’s goal is to help in the connection between companies and customers “in an increasingly natural way”.

In Brazil, the technology is already being used in tests in three distinct ways. According to Google, it’s possible to perform calls to update business info in Maps and Search. It’s also possible to automate internet tasks and check voting locations. The latter is important for Brazilians since the country will go through the electoral process later this year.

The registration update process will use Google Duplex’s impressive natural voice language for business calls in Brazil. The search giant will contact certain businesses asking them to change the info that appears on Maps and Google Search when necessary.

Google Duplex comes to automate several processes in Brazil

As per Google, it makes more than 200 calls through the Google Duplex initiative. More than 50,000 businesses have already been served by the technology in Brazil. “As soon as someone answers the phone, Duplex explains that the call is part of the Google Maps update process, then asks to confirm opening and closing times,” explains the company.

In addition to the business approach, Google Duplex also has other goals in Brazil. The company is testing the tool for the automation of e-commerce. In partnership with Ingresso.com (A website for theater tickets), it’s possible to get a ticket for a theater straight from Google Search. It speeds up a process that can take some time and can be hard for people that is not familiar with the web. In Brazil, there is a small portion of people that actually has a high familiarity with the web and e-commerce.

In Partnership with the country’s Electoral Authority, people will also use Google Duplex to check their voting location. Google, in fact, has been working hard to make its services “smarter”. Google Maps, for example, has started to tell how much a trip will cost. The search giant definitively has a smart AI, and sometimes a scary one.
