The arrival of Always on Display mode on iPhones has been cycling through the rumor mill since immemorial times. Earlier this year, these rumors were further heated with rumors pointing to their debut with the iOS 16 release. However, iOS 16 was announced without AOD. Instead, Apple introduces many new changes to the lock screen with customization and widgets support. Now, reports suggest that the AOD will be tied to the iPhone 14 Pro series. Today, a new report citing Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, states that Always on Display is being developed for the Apple iPhone 14 Pro models and is considering the new lock screen widget options on iOS 16.
The AOD on iPhone 14 Pro will support useful information such as weather, fitness, and more. According to Gurman, the feature will work just like the Apple Watch. Users will be able to check weather info, calendar data, stocks, events, and other data while keeping the screen low brightness and low frame rate. It will conserve the battery since the panel is OLED. According to the report, the AOD will also prevent sensitive data from appearing on the lock screen and prevent other users from seeing it. Apparently, the users will be able to customize options such as Time, Date, and Unread Notifications.

Always On Display will be exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro series
As per analysts, users will be able to enable AOD mode via the iPhone 14 Pro settings. The feature may not reach older iPhones, but will likely be available with the next iPhones. The feature will combine “lower brightness” with “lower refresh rate” to extend battery life while in use. It’s interesting since you won’t need to turn the screen on to check some details. Talking about the “lower refresh rate”, Apple has introduced the Adaptive Refresh Rate. It’s Apple’s so-called “ProMotion” tech that reduces the display refresh rate to 10 Hz to conserve energy.
The article makes it clear that AOD and ProMotion features will remain exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. Curiously, Apple seems to be splitting its lineup into “less flagship” and “more flagship” this year.
In Addition to AOD, Mark Gurman revealed a lot of details for the iPhone 14 series as well as details for the iPhone 15 and other Apple products.
