We need the internet everywhere and always. Elon Musk understands this better than we and you. That’s why he founded SpaceX. The latter has a goal to bring the internet to all corners of the globe. Well, initially, to every corner of the US. But when saying this, we do not mean land only․ Today, TechCrunch reported that this internet service provider is launching a new yacht-focused sub-brand, namely Starlink Maritime.
Starlink Maritime Brings Much Faster Connectivity
Frankly, SpaceX is not the first company that is trying to bring satellite internet to the water. But what we have had previously was a very expensive service for DSL-like connectivity. In this regard, Starlink Maritime is going to solve the pain points of the previous services, offering faster internet on your yacht. The company proves that the internet speed will reach 350 Mbps. Unfortunately, it’s not a cheap service – the monthly price is $5,000, plus, there is a one-time hardware fee of $10,000 for the dual terminals you’ll need. However, if you have a yacht, this is an acceptable offer, isn’t it?.
Gizchina News of the week
“Two Perf Dishes quadruples performance — so that helps reduce latency, ping drops, or loss of signal at sea because of the wider FOV provided by the two Dishes,” Starlink’s Joseph Scarantino wrote on Twitter.
Also, the equipment should be installed where a clear view of the sky is visible. For this, there is a special app identifying whether the equipment is in the right place.
Starlink Maritime “allows you to connect from some of the most remote waters in the world.” Currently, the service is available in coastal waters in North America (primarily the U.S.), Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, and Chile. Thus, during a Mediterranean cruise, you will have internet. But do not hope that the service will work during trans-ocean trips.
However, Starlink claims they will work on expanding their coverage to more waters. The first destinations include the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. In the fourth quarter of 2022 and the first quarter of 2023, you will have internet in these waters as well.
Lastly, at the moment, there are maritime internet providers that cover most ocean waters, depending on the coverage plan. But the speed is not satisfactory.
