After a one-year hiatus, Motorola is back to the foldable segment with the Motorola RAZR 2022. The company didn’t have much luck with the previous iterations due to the limitations. For instance, the first RAZR foldable were “mid-range” phones with Snapdragon 700 series chips. Another downside was the tepid battery capacity. We can also cite the design that tried to appeal to the old RAZR flip phones. That certainly was not appealing to some fans of modern designs and bezel-less trends. Motorola is fixing all these downsides with the Motorola RAZR 2022. For the first time in years, the foldable may have a chance against the big ones in the growing segment.
Motorola RAZR 2022 specs and highlights
The Motorola RAZR 2022 brings a refined design, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, and a 3,500 mAh battery. The latter represents a major improvement since the old phones had a 2,800 mAh capacity. To compare, Samsung managed to increase the battery with the Z Flip4 to 3,700 mAh, but the last year’s model had a 3,300 mAh capacity. The Motorola RAZR 2022 also gets improvements on the displays, cameras and etc.
The Motorola RAZR 2022 inner display has a 6.7-inch diagonal. It brings a better hinge that bends in a pear shape to close completely when folded. The panel also supports HDR 10+ and comes with a gorgeous 144 Hz refresh rate. The phone no longer has the old notch reminiscent of the old RAZR phones. Instead, we have a punch-hole cutout that houses the 32 MP selfie shooter. When it comes to the outer panel, it’s a 2.7-inch OLED panel with touch support that also serves as a viewfinder for selfies with the main camera setup.
The Motorola RAZR 2022 dual-camera setup brings a 50 MP main camera with 1/1.55″ and Optical Image Stabilization. The secondary camera is a 13 MP ultrawide-angle shooter with 121 degrees Field of View.
The phone’s new 3,500 mAh battery comes with support for 33 W fast-charging which is also a major improvement. Other features include RAW shooting, Android 12 with MyUI 4.0 interface, dual-speakers with Dolby Atmos, and DC Dimming.
Pricing and Availability
The phone is available for pre-orders in China. It comes only in a black colorway. The phone’s price is CNY 5,999 ($890) for an 8 GB / 128 GB variant. There is also a CNY 6,499 option that costs ($965) with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of Internal Storage. Finally, we have a premium tier with 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of Storage that sets you back by CNY 7,299 ($1,085).
It’s unclear whether this phone will hit global markets. We hope it does, after all, Samsung keeps free to build its stronghold as the only major smartphone OEM selling its foldable phones worldwide.
Worth noting that Motorola also took the opportunity to unleash the Motorola X30 Pro with a 200MP camera, and the S30 Pro with Snapdragon 888.
