PS5 price raises in Canada, Europe and more regions

PS5

If you’ve been waiting for a better deal to purchase your PlayStation 5, we bring bad news. Sony has just announced through PS Blog, that the PlayStation 5 is getting a price hike in several regions across the world. Therefore, the videogame giant has listed regions such as Europe, The Middle East, Africa, Pacific Asia, Latin America, and Canada. In all these regions, the new prices can be already adopted by retailers. That means, that you won’t be getting the long-waited discount for your PS5.

Several countries will get a costlier PS5 from now

Sony is increasing the price of the digital and standard PlayStation 5 models in Australia, Canada, China, Europe, Japan, Mexico, and the UK. Curiously, Brazil, where the PS5 (physical edition) already costs nearly $885 is not part of this hike. Anyway, we assume that it’s just a matter of time until other regions follow suit. Therefore, this increase is something that all PS5 fans across the world need to pay attention to.

Countries Digital Physical
Australia
AU$649.95
AU$799.95
Canada

To those unaware, the European pricing was previously set at €399 and €499. The United Kingdom, on the other hand, had pricing set at £359 and £449. According to Sony, the new price hike comes in light of the recent economic challenges in the world. With this in mind, the company cites global inflation as one of the biggest causes of the price increase. Moreover, the company cites the adverse currency trends, that have been impacting consumers and creating pressure on many industries.

For that reason, the company has made the difficult decision to increase the PS5 price. However, the United States is out of this price hike. Potential buyers will still be able to find the PS5 at the regular launch price. The US is one of the PS5’s most important markets, therefore, we assume that Sony is trying to play a safe game. However, the UK is equally as important and is getting the hike.

Just another chapter in this tough launch

Worth noting that Sony has been facing challenges since the PS5 launch. The shortage of components has been affecting the console’s production since its launch at the end of 2020. Even in mid-2022, finding PS5 units for sale is not an easy task in some regions. The situation may improve only in the next few years, as Sony has partnered with TSMC for PS5’s chipset manufacturing and is collaborating with a TSMC plant establishment in Japan. The company left the following statement:

“While this price increase is a necessity given the current global economic environment and its impact on SIE’s business, our priority remains to improve the supply situation so that as many gamers as possible can experience everything the PS5 offers and what is yet to come.”

This price hike happens just a few months before God of War Ragnarok’s launch. It is certainly one of the most anticipated games for the PlayStation 5. Although the game will also run on PS4, most fans, are expecting the best experience to come only on the PS5. Worth noting, that Sony has recently announced a new PS5 DualSense Edge controller for professional players and enthusiasts.
