DxOmark: Xiaomi 12S Ultra camera is better than the iPhone 13 Pro Max

Xiaomi 12S Ultra

At the beginning of July, Xiaomi unveiled its new smartphones to the world: it is the 12S series, formed by the Xiaomi 12S, Xiaomi 12S Pro and Xiaomi 12S Ultra.

We expect a lot from these devices, especially from the Ultra variant. Thanks to the integration of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. And the cameras developed in collaboration with the historic German company Leica. DxOMark, an authority in terms of judging photographic performance, has just tested the Xiaomi 12S Ultra camera.

The final result is quite disappointing, relative to the technical caliber of the device. Xiaomi 12S Ultra camera has achieved an overall score of 138 points. Placing the device in fifth place in the general ranking. Including all smartphones tested over time by DxOMark.

Xiaomi 12S Ultra ranks 5th on DxOMark, worse than Mi 11 Ultra but better than the iPhone 13 Pro Max

The fact that Xiaomi 12S Ultra is under Xiaomi 11 Ultra, the predecessor that last year did not enjoy the support of Leica for the realization of the photographic sector, poses a lot of questions. Above the latest device from Xiaomi, we also find the Huawei P40 Pro +. The brand can be satisfied to be ahead of the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max and the Pixel 6 Pro.

Going deeper into the analysis of DxOMark, we realize that most of the criticalities depend on software aspects, such as instability of exposure and HDR rendering, instability of focus and exposure when using the camera, visible noise in high contrast scenes.

Among its strengths, however, we find the performance of the autofocus, excellent color rendering. Especially for the mode developed by Leica, excellent long-range zoom performance of the telephoto lens.

So we could also assume that performance could improve with targeted software updates. For more details, however, we suggest you read the complete analysis conducted by DxOMark in detail.
