Tesla is doing quite well in the electric car market and the Model Y appears to be its “golden boy”. In September, the Tesla Model Y was Australia’s best-selling SUV with 4359 deliveries, and third overall in new vehicle sales. Only the Toyota Hilux (5170) and Ford Ranger (4890) sold more than the Model Y. Last month, the Tesla Model Y also became the best-selling car in Germany. It beats the likes of the Volkswagen Golf and Volkswagen Tiguan. Now, a new report from JATO Dynamics based on new car registrations shows that the Tesla Model Y is the best-selling car in Europe for the first time.
Tesla Model sold almost 30,000 units
London-based JATO Dynamics said on Wednesday: “This is the first time Tesla’s sport utility vehicle has been ranked No. 1 in Europe, with 29,367 Model Y vehicles registered last month, up 227 per cent from last year.”

The data also shows that the second-largest model in European registrations is the Peugeot 208. In the third position is Renault’s Dacia Sandero. Both the Peugeot 208 and Dacia Sandero are much cheaper than the Model Y. Tesla confirmed that as of the end of September, the Berlin Gigafactory achieved a production rate of 2,000 Model Y vehicles a week.
In August of this year, the company launched a cheap rear-wheel-drive version of the Model Y in Europe. The car has a WLTP cruising range of 455 kilometers. For reference, its long-range Model Y launched in Europe has a cruising range of 533 kilometers. In terms of power, the rear-wheel drive Model Y has a top speed of 217 km/h. It also has an acceleration time of 6.9 seconds from 0-100 km/h. The official website shows that the car is expected to be delivered between December 2022 and February 2023.
In terms of price, the rear-wheel drive version of the Tesla Model Y starts at 50,000 euros in the Netherlands. This is 16,000 euros cheaper than the long-range version. After considering the exchange rate, and VAT, if this car sells in the U.S., it will be $20,000 cheaper. In some European markets, the rear-wheel-drive Model Y is even cheaper than the standard Model 3.
