Twitter employees need two months’ notice
Employees claim the company is laying off workers without sufficient notice. They believe that this violatesĀ U.S. federal and California law. They filed a class-action lawsuit against the company in federal court in San Francisco on Thursday. In an email to employees, Twitter said the company plans to start laying off workers on Friday.Ā Musk wants to cut costs for the company, including infrastructure costs.
The federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act restricts large companies from making mass layoffs without at least 60 days’ notice.Ā The class-action lawsuit seeks a court order requiring Twitter to comply with the above-mentioned act and restricting the company from requiring employees to sign documents that could waive their right to participate in the lawsuit.
“We’re filing this tonight to make sure employees realize they shouldn’t give up their rights, they have a channel to pursue their rights,” Shannon Liss-Riordan, the attorney who filed Thursday’s complaint, said in an interview.
As of now, there is no official response from Twitter with respect to the lawsuit. In June, Musk’s Tesla cut about 10% of its workforce, and Liss-Riordan sued Tesla over similar claims.
