Qualcomm unveiled the high-end Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip this week. The manufacturer revealed some of the smartphone manufacturers whose models will come with the new chip in the next few weeks. In this article, we propose you a selection of the most important smartphones that will arrive with this powerful chip starting next month.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset has a performance increase compared to the Gen 1 model, and we will soon experience this performance since the first Gen 2 devices are just around the corner.
The SM8550-AB, the official name of this chip, was manufactured on a 4nm production process. Although Qualcomm has concentrated on increasing power efficiency, the new chip still offers noticeable speed increases. The new Kryo CPU trio offers up to 40% more efficiency and up to 35% more performance.
The core setup is different from the 8+ Gen 1, but the clock rates are the same. High single-threaded performance is provided by the single Kryo Prime core (based on Cortex-X3), which operates at 3.2GHz (3.1872GHz to be exact). This time, however, it is supported by four Performance cores (instead of three) that operate at 2.8GHz to better handle multi-threaded workloads. Finally, there are three (rather than four) 2.0GHz Efficiency cores.
Up to 25% more performance and up to 45% more power efficiency are promised by the most recent Adreno GPU. The Snapdragon platform now has support for hardware-accelerated ray tracing. The major Android chipset vendors now offer ray tracing hardware, so it’s possible that mobile game developers will adopt the new technology like they did for PC and console games.
On-device displays with QHD+ resolution can run at up to 144Hz on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and those with 4K resolution can run at up to 60Hz. Additionally, it supports external displays up to 4K at 60Hz (as well as HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and the 10-bit Rec. 2020 color gamut).

Samsung Galaxy S23
The Galaxy S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra are among the upcoming future smartphones with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 that have already run through Geekbench. The benchmark reported the following frequencies for the three clusters when they completed it: 3.36GHz cores in the prime, 2.80GHz cores in performance, and 2.02GHz cores in efficiency.
But there are many other future phones that will use the 8 Gen 2 CPU, not only the Samsung flagships. Additionally, some of them have provided benchmarks, such as the Vivo X90 Pro and iQOO 11. But pay close attention, the Prime core’s listed frequency on those is 3.19GHz. 3.1872GHz was the exact value stated by Qualcomm. Why then do the Samsungs have faster clock speeds?
Ice Universe previously stated that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will have an “exclusive high-frequency version” for the European market. Although the benchmarks we’ve seen thus far are from US models, this is likely a global issue rather than one that only affects Europe.
Now the leaker provides more information, confirming that the Prime CPU core will in fact run at 3.36GHz rather than 3.2GHz. But the GPU will also operate at a faster speed, 719MHz compared to 680MHz.
Periodically, Qualcomm has launched “AC” versions that have faster clock speeds than the base processor. For instance, the Snapdragon 855 has the model number SM8150, and the 855+, which increased the Prime core’s speed from 2.84GHz to 2.96GHz, has the model number SM8150-AC. This should be the SM8550-AC since the 8 Gen 2 that was unveiled this week is the SM8550-AB.
It’s unclear if the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2 moniker will apply to this processor, which is destined for the Galaxy S23 series. However, it appears that Qualcomm and TSMC were able to find sufficient space for a respectable overclock.
According to official statistics from Qualcomm, the GPU is 25% quicker and the 8 Gen 2 CPU is 35% faster than its 8 Gen 1 cousin. This new chip version will be significantly quicker. However, it is difficult to determine how much faster because benchmark results should not be interpreted just yet.
The upcoming Samsung Galaxy S23 series is expected to launch in January next year.
Xiaomi 13
By the end of November, according to several sources, the new flagship Xiaomi series would be unveiled, but more recently, other sources have pointed to December 1 as the day for the announcement. The new Qualcomm chip, which will be combined with up to 12 GB of RAM, will be present in this series, which will provide true high performance.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset from Qualcomm, which was just announced, will power the upcoming OnePlus 11. A statement made public on the Chinese social media site Weibo by the brand itself confirming the information.

Motorola Moto X40
Motorola will also unveil its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 model. Which is available inside the Moto X40 and comes with up to 16 GB of RAM and up to 512 GB of storage.
The resolution of the 6.67-inch panel, whose high refresh rate is 144 Hz, is yet unknown. It includes a 5,000 mAh battery with 68-watt rapid charging and runs Android 13.

Vivo X90 Pro
