The S Pen is a feature that is exclusive to the Galaxy Note series. However, since Samsung quietly cancelled the Note series, the S Pen was then used for the Galaxy Ultra models. Subsequently, the company used this feature for its Z Fold series. However, it appears that the S Pen will not survive in the Z Fold series. According to etnews, Samsung Electronics finally cancelled its plan to embed the S Pen in the new folding screen mobile phone. This means that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 will not come with an S Pen like its predecessor. This device will be official in the second half of the year. The report reveals that Samsung is expunging the S Pen because it has an impact on the internal space of the mobile phone.
Since Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Fold phone in 2019, users have mostly expressed their need for the S Pen. However, the company did not introduce the S Pen until the Galaxy Z Fold 3 which was released in 2021. Even when it did on the Z Fold 3, this model’s S Pen doesn’t have a built-in slot like the Galaxy Note. You have to buy the S Pen separately and you can only store the S Pen separately. For this reason, the demand for the built-in S Pen has been steadily increasing.
According to the reports, the S Pen has a high technical threshold, thus, a built-in S Pen is possible. However, Samsung will not want this because the phone will become much thicker. The company thinks that it is not worth it. Of course, another way is to make the pen thinner. But in this case, the writing experience of the stylus will become worse. Also, it will cost more to produce this lower pen, thus, this is not an option.
Samsung to improve on its S Pen
Samsung Electronics is said to be developing a technology that could improve the writing experience while making the pen thinner. An industry source close to the company said … “The hinge structure of the new folding product has changed, and the internal space structure has also changed, so it is difficult to install the S Pen”. According to a previous report from The Pixel, Samsung has begun testing the Galaxy Z Fold 5 internally. This new foldable model will be equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon flagship chip. The mysterious chip uses a 4nm process and may be Samsung’s custom CPU for foldable devices.
