When attempting to install Chrome using Edge Canary, users are now facing two ads. The first, a small pop-up that appears when the Chrome website loads, then a massive full-size banner that appears once the download starts. This move is seen as an attempt by Microsoft to discourage users from installing other browsers.

Not content with simply using ads, Microsoft also tries to throw shade at Chrome. The banner claims that Edge uses the same technology as Chrome, but with the added trust of Microsoft. Note here that the Bing search engine is the default search engine. Additionally, users cannot remove Edge from the computer.

While Microsoft’s tactics may be limited to a specific set of Edge insiders or regions, the company’s lack of consideration for user experience is concerning. It is worth noting that the latest stable Edge release did not have the banner, but this does not mean that Microsoft will not try similar tactics in the future.
It is unfortunate that Microsoft, despite having a great browser, chooses to make it more irritating for its users. The company needs to focus on improving user experience instead of forcing users to stay on Edge. While competition is healthy, it should not come at the expense of the user.
