HMD has just announced the Nokia G22. And it is not like any other phone that we have seen from the brand. Instead, the manufacturer is going all-in regarding sustainability and repairability.
In other words, the Nokia G22 is for owners who want to hold onto their phones for over two years. And as you know, the major problems for phones nowadays are broken glass and highly degraded batteries.
So, how does HMD plan to fix these issues with the Nokia G22? Let’s take a deeper dive into the approach of the manufacturer.
Nokia G22 Revolutionizes Smartphone Repairability Standards
Basically, the main focus of HMD is to make the Nokia G22 as easy to repair as possible. HMD mainly focused on battery replacement. In fact, it will take you only 5 minutes to replace a degraded battery of the phone.
Most interestingly, you will not even require a specialized tool to do so. The SIM ejector tool that comes with the Nokia G22 is more than enough. And if you lose it, you can use a screwdriver or a guitar pick.
So, what about replacing the display? Well, it will take you about 20 minutes to replace the broken screen of the Nokia G22. Again, there will be no need to use too many tools for the screen replacement process.
To provide the required tools, HMD partnered with iFixit. But it’s not just the tools; iFixit will also offer guides and parts that you need to replace the screen, change the charging port, and install a new battery in the Nokia G22.
In case you didn’t note, you will not require a heating gun to get the back of the G22 apart. Moreover, there will be no need for any alcohol to get the battery out.

Now, if you don’t want to do all of these steps, you can obviously take the G22 to an authorized service center. However, for those who want to take their phone’s lifespan to the next level, these steps taken by Nokia will surely take away most of the limitations.
Core Specs of G22
In terms of the build, the Nokia G22 mostly focused on sustainability. The entire back cover of the phone is made of 100% recycled plastic. And the case is the same for the packaging material too. The box utilizes fully certified FSC Mix materials.
Now, when it comes to the hardware, the G22 has a 6.52-inch HD+ screen. It features a Gorilla Glass 3 as protection and can run at a 90Hz refresh rate. The display also houses an 8MP camera, which can be used for face unlocking. And the best part is that the face-unlocking feature works even when the user is wearing a mask.
Furthermore, you will find a side-mounted fingerprint scanner on the Nokia G22, which will double as a power button. Under the hood, there is a Unisoc T606 chipset. Nokia paired it up with 4GB of RAM. And there are two different storage options: 64 GB or 128 GB.
On the back of the G22, you will find a 50MP primary sensor. A 2MP macro sensor and a 2MP depth sensor will accompany the main sensor. This triple-camera system might not sound fancy, but it will surely let you take good shots. A 5055mAh battery is going to power all of these internal components, which you can charge at 20W.
In terms of software, HMD will launch the device with Android 12. HMD promises 2 major OS updates and 3 years of security updates. That means you can expect the Nokia G22 to get Android 14. Overall, the specs look great for the device. And because it will be priced at around 180 EUR ($190), you will surely get a lot for your money.
