Honor recently introduced the Honor Magic Vs to global markets and the device certainly impressed the fans of the foldable segment. After all, it brings a huge evolution for the hinge. With its technology, the Honor Magic Vs is almost flat when folded, something that Samsung was not able to do with the past Galaxy Z Fold series. With Honor competing in the international scene, Samsung needs to improve the design of its foldable. After all, not only Honor, but other brands can soon present more advanced technologies that make the Z Fold and its big crease look obsolete. As per a new report, the design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 hinge is almost complete.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 hinge development is almost completed
The new report comes from the South-Korean news outlet The Elec. According to it, Samsung has started testing the new teardrop hinge for the Galaxy Z Fold5. The phone is expected to hit the market in the second half of 2023, with its announcement happening something in August. To those unaware, the teardrop hinge is a design that allows the axils to roll on themselves inside the hinge and brings many advantages. As expected, it can reduce the gap between the two halves of the phone.
Interestingly, at CES 2023, Samsung showed the first signs of a new hinge tech. That one was 14mm thin as opposed to the current implementation which has 15.8 mm of thickness. We are curious to see if the new technology will make its way to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5. Hopefully, the new foldable won’t be too similar to its predecessor. Otherwise, Samsung will be behind its competitors that have better design implementation.
Right now the benchmark and testing are obstacles that Samsung needs to overcome. Right now, the hinge prototype needs to go through a benchmark of five days. During the tests, machines will test the hinge for 200,000 folds. The goal is to determine if the hinge will retain at least 85% of its initial tightness and strength. Let’s see if the Korean brand will make it good in time for a possible Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5.
Gizchina News of the week
Will be the new foldable a real upgrade from Samsung?
Samsung certainly has evolved a lot in the technologies employed in its Galaxy Z Fold phones. From the messy Galaxy Fold to the Galaxy Z Fold 2 we saw massive improvements, and they came until the most recent Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. However, one can think that the lineup is starting to become boring. For that reason, there are many users eagerly waiting to see advancements in this technology. Triple-folding screens, or foldable folds inwards and outwards. These are among the most anticipated changes for foldable phones. Considering that Samsung was one of the “mothers” of this category, it’s natural to see the hype surrounding the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5. However, we don’t think that the new foldable will bring so many revolutionary changes.
The first reason is that, as we’ve written above, technical advancements take time and need testing. Samsung already demoed the future of its foldable, but showing is different from actually being ready for the mass market. For that reason, there is no guarantee that such advanced technologies will be present in the Galaxy Z Fold5. For now, upgrades on technical aspects like the hinge, and the battery are more realistic upgrades.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 should bring a better design than its predecessor. In terms of hardware, we expect incremental upgrades. The foldable will likely stick with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy. The battery may get bigger, and we expect a new iteration of One UI 5.1 with new features. As we already know, Samsung will not fit an S Pen stylus in the upcoming foldable.
In this world of leaks, we don’t need to hold our breath for much longer. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 will likely appear in several leaks ahead of its release. For that reason, we just need to wait and have patience.
