Almost every user on the WhatsApp platform happens to be in one or more WhatsApp groups. Different people create WhatsApp groups for different purposes. Some may be for the long term while others may be for the short term. For short term groups especially, the group is left idle when the reason why the group was formed is complete. Some users delete the group immediately after the purpose is complete while most users just forget about the group without deleting.
Unused WhatsApp Groups Eat Up Storage
In as much as it does not really bother a lot of people, idle groups may eat into your storage and even your RAM. On the side of WhatsApp, there may be millions of unused WhatsApp groups that are occupying a large amount of server storage. The company has finally come out with a solution to that. This new solution will spare us the stress of deleting idle WhatsApp groups after using them. The new feature will make it easier to delete unused WhatsApp groups and chats.
Gizchina News of the week
The Meta owned messaging platform began with disappearing messages. A feature that can automatically delete chats after a set time. WhatsApp plans to expand the functionality of this feature beyond just chats. A new feature is in the works for disappearing WhatsApp Groups as well. How this feature will work is quite simple and easy. Officially the feature will be called Expiring Groups. As the name goes, this feature will allow users to set an expiring date for WhatsApp Groups. When the date is up, the group is supposed to dissolve automatically.
How Will Expiring Groups on WhatsApp Work
A screenshot of the iOS version of this feature displays other functionalities that come with it. For example, you can set the WhatsApp group to expire after a day, a week or a custom date where the users can set on their own. You can also decide to remove the predefined date if you change your mind.
Despite its name, there is a bit of contradiction when you are setting an expiry date for the group. A prompt pops up which says that the group will not entirely delete. It will rather prompt users to clear the chats in the group. So, it’s more like WhatsApp telling you “Hey time’s up for you clear your chats, they are eating up our storage”.
This new feature is yet to come out and we wait to see how effective it will be and of course, what happens if people refuse to clear their group messages.
