It’s the end of an era for the PlayStation division. After almost ten years of success, the PS4 is finally showing signs of fatigue and is losing ground for its successor, the PS5. According to a fresh report, the PS5 is finally outselling the PS4 in the United States. There are a lot of reasons that can justify this. The stocks for the PS5 are finally being ensured at a good pace at the same time that the PS4 is losing ground with fewer games reaching the old platform.
The PS5 currently is the best-selling console for Sony
The PS5 had a rough start in 2020. It was launched in the middle of the global crisis in the semiconductor industry. Sony faced multiple constraints to ensure the stocks for the last-gen console. Since it was not able to keep up the stocks, the brand gave afterlife support for the PS4. The 2014’s console got unexpected releases like God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, and Gran Turismo 7. Now, it seems that the console has finally reached its end. This year, the PS5 will get Final Fantasy XVI and Spider-Man 2 and none of these will come from the old platform.
As per Mat Piscatella of Circana, “The PlayStation 5 hardware unit sales have now overcome those of the PlayStation 4 on a time-aligned basis (29 months in Market”.
Worth noting, that the PS5 numbers are nowhere near where the PS4 is now. The old-gen console launched in 2014 and already sold over 117.01 million units. With those numbers, the console figures as one of the best-selling consoles for Sony, easily surpassing its predecessor. That also explains why a lot of publishers are still launching games for the old-gen console. While the PS5 is behind, the device is on a good pace to become another hit. The PS5 has sold about 34.47 million.
The PlayStation 5 beat the Xbox Series X and the Switch
The positive numbers go beyond Sony’s ecosystem. The PS5 drove overall hardware sales for the month of March in the US. As per Circana, the PS5 was the best-selling console in both units and dollars for both March as well as the entirety of 2023 thus far.
“Accessories spending grew 1% in March when compared to a year ago, to $239 million,” Piscatella said. “Gamepads brought the highest dollar sales of any accessory segment. The PlayStation 5 Dual Sense Edge Wireless Controller Black ranked as the month’s best-selling gamepad in dollar sales.”
Worth noting that the PS5 is selling more than its direct competitor the Xbox Series X, and more than the Nintendo Switch. All this success comes amidst new rumors about hardware. As per the reports, Sony is gearing up to introduce a new model with a removable disc driver. It will replace both the Digital and Disc Editions. As a result, Sony will produce just a single console compatible with the removable disc driver. In the end, it will ease the manufacturing process and improve the stocks even further. There are also rumors about a PS5 Pro in the planning and a new PlayStation portable.
