Qualcomm recently introduced the Snapdragon Game Super Resolution feature. It’s not a surprise to see Qualcomm raising its efforts in the gaming scene. In fact, gaming is a strong industry, and the mobile segment became an important part of this industry in the past years. With the rise of new technologies, the gap between high-quality mobile games and AAA is shortening. Since the last year, mobile makers have been trying to explore console features like ray tracing. The latest Snapdragon solution is basically Qualcomm’s take on NVIDIA’s DLSS technology.
NVIDIA started the trend, and now Qualcomm is the latest to join
NVIDIA’s pioneer tech DLSS is a resolution sampler tech that set a standard for the industry. This feature revamped high-resolution gaming with the rise of the RTX 3000 series. AMD followed suit with a similar technology, the FidelityFX Super Resolution FSR). Now, the Snapdragon maker comes with its own take on Super Sampling Tech. The new feature, Snapdragon Game Super Resolution (GSR), is a first for the mobile space. It aims to upscale game content and provide better performance for users. The game will have higher resolution but the hardware won’t need to actually push that native resolution.
The Snapdragon GSR can upscale 1080p gameplay to 4K with minimal impact on latency and battery life. It makes use of a single-pass super-resolution tech. Further, it combines upscaling and edge sharpening into one. It results in reduced latency and power consumption. In the end, it greatly improves the overall performance of games. The single pass can also be combined with other post-processing passes, such as tone mapping.
As per the giant, the new tech can increase the resolution and keep the graphic fidelity. Moreover, it can increase the frame rate of games, keep visual fidelity, and reduce power consumption. For obvious reasons, the tech is optimized on Adreno GPUs. The company gave examples of it working with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Gen 2, SD7 Gen 1, and the SD6 Gen 1.
Gizchina News of the week
The company did not disclose a full list, but we can assume that it’s meant to support the “Snapdragon Gen series”. Since it works with the SD7 Gen 1, we can assume it also works with the newer Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2. Since the Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 has not been mentioned, we believe it’s out of the supported list.
Qualcomm states that the Snapdragon GSR will be available for the following games this year:
- Call of Duty Warzone Mobile
- Jade Dynasty: New Fantasy
- Return to Empire
- Justice Mobile
- Naraka Mobile
- Farming Simulator 23 Mobile
The rise of this new technology is not only important for smartphones. Qualcomm is raising its efforts to become a strong provider of “ARM gaming” hardware. The Snapdragon Gx series is there for handhelds, and this technology will play a vital role in the next processors of this family.
