Before releasing the final version to all end users, Google always releases several beta versions of its operating system. This is a common practice that allows them to test the new OS before the official launch. In other words, it selects some users and asks them to test the new version of Android. Based on their feedback, Google makes some adjustments, fixes the bugs, and then releases the final version. The same goes for the Android 14 system. It recently released Android 14 Beta 2. As well as fixing a few bugs, it also added a few new features. One of them allows users to select the frequency band of Wi-Fi hotspots. This feature is currently hidden and must be manually enabled on rooted devices.

A Wi-Fi hotspot is a feature that turns your phone into a wireless router. Once enabled, it allows other devices to connect to the internet through your phone. Different Wi-Fi hotspot frequency bands have different characteristics. For example, the 2.4 GHz band has better compatibility and wider coverage, but the speed is slower; the 5 GHz band is faster, but the coverage area is smaller. It’s no secret that not all devices support both. My smartphone does, for example, but my laptop only supports the 2.4GHz band.

The Wi-Fi hotspot feature of Android 14 Beta 2 has added a ‘speed and compatibility’ option. So once Android 14 is out, users will be able to choose the frequency band they need.
In addition to the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands, Android 14 Beta 2 also shows a 6GHz frequency band. However, you still can’t select it. This could mean that some future Pixel phones will support 6GHz Wi-Fi hotspots. We know that this band is faster, but has less range and less compatibility.
Android 14 Beta 2 is expected to be the final version of the system before its launch in June.
