Fairphone entered the headphone market in 2021 with its first TWS. They have now launched their first over-ear headphones called FairBuds XL. Like their other offerings, Fairphone emphasizes sustainability and repairability with these headphones. The company has used a modular design to make them easier to repair for users. So let’s talk about the design, and specifications of FairBuds XL in detail here.
FairBuds XL Design
The Fairbuds XL has a really clever modular design. It has 11 different parts that you can take apart if you need to fix something. For instance, if the soft cushions on the ears get worn out, you can replace them without using any tools. And when the battery doesn’t hold as much, you can also replace it with a new one. This flexibility means that these headphones can last a long time. Even longer than some of the best headphones you can find in stores right now.
Fairphone not only made it easy to fix their headphones, but they also made sure to keep them sustainable. The headphones are made out of recycled materials like plastic and aluminum. While things like ear cushions and headband are made from vegan leather. You can choose the FairBuds XL in Green and Black. You can also fold the headphone which makes it portable to carry them wherever you go.

But, what about audio?
For audio, the FairBuds XL uses 40mm dynamic drivers. They also have ANC to eliminate distractions caused by background noise. The ANC mode can be activated via a dedicated button on the headphone. The headphones connect to your device through Bluetooth 5.1 and feature multi-point connectivity as well as the aptx HD codec.
Fairphone claims that with ANC enabled, the headphone has a playback time of up to 26 hours. That’s quite impressive. However, with ANC turned off, you can extend it to 30 hours. The battery will achieve 80% of its maintained capacity after 500 charging cycles, according to the manufacturer. So you’ll undoubtedly notice lower battery life after a year, but at least you can replace it.
FairBuds XL Price and Availability
You can buy the Fairbuds XL headphones right now in Europe from the Fairphone store. They cost €250 or £220. But do note that the headphones don’t come with a charger or even a charging cable inside the box. Although, you can use any USB-C cable to charge them. Currently, the spare parts for the headphones are not available either, so we don’t know how much they will cost.
