MediaTek announced the Dimensity 9200 as its flagship chipset for 2023. It is the only one after Apple that has the potential to give stiff competition to Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The Taiwanese company has now shed lights on its upcoming flagship chipset. Although MediaTek hasn’t confirmed the name, the SoC is believed to bear the moniker Dimensity 9300.

The company announced on Weibo that its upcoming Dimensity chip will include Arm’s latest CPU cores. It conists of the powerful Cortex-X4 and efficient Cortex-A720. On the graphics front, we are likely to see the Arm Immortalis Mali-G720 GPU. The news shouldn’t come as surprising since the manufacturer has been using Arm’s latest CPU and GPU for its flagship SoCs for a couple of years now.

The company also said that the new SoC will come with a “groundbreaking architecture.” It will offer enhanced multitasking capabilities and superior performance. Even in multi-threaded applications and games.

Not much has been revealed

MediaTek announced its upcoming flagship SoC will come with a ground-breaking architecture. But the company is yet to reveal whether the Cortex-X4 and Cortex-A720 will be accompanied by the new Cortex-A520 CPU core. The latter is an efficiency core that debuted alongside the former two CPU cores.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor had four efficiency CPU cores. But the company replaced one of them with a fourth mid-core last year. New reports suggest that Qualcomm may now use two small cores in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. If these rumors are true, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will have a ‘1 + 5 + 2’ configuration.

But the chip manufacturers shouldn’t underestimate the little CPU core. They are equally important in a CPU stack for efficiency and they can handle light tasks with ease. But its up to chipmakers to decide how to best stack the new CPU cores to get the best performance. MediaTek says its upcoming flagship chipset will be both faster and more efficient.
