Game Changer or Hype? Assessing Player Feedback on AI Generated Games [Word Reef]

There is no denying that artificial intelligence is taking over the world at a faster rate than we all thought. AI has become increasingly common in various aspects of our lives in recent years. Artificial intelligence is making it a lot easier and faster to accomplish a lot of tasks lately. From internet browsers and search engines to even vehicles. AI is really bringing the future of technology closer to humanity.

The limitless capabilities of artificial intelligence provide creators and developers with endless possibilities. For example, we have seen people create movie scenes with the help of AI. Other AI-generated projects encompass creative photos, music, video clips, and more.

The most recent AI-generated project happens to be a game. The team at Wordfinder by YourDictionary have been able to create a new word game called Word Reef. The team created this game by cultivating the help of AI tools. Specifically, they used ChatGPT and MidJourney. The team then surveyed the interest of players without revealing to them that the game was generated by AI.

In the game Word Reef, players create words by using letter tiles on a coral reef background. As players advance through the game and achieve specific goals, they can expand their reefs by adding various types of coral and unlock virtual sea creatures. Along the journey, players can enjoy special bonuses like “bubble boost” to aid their progress. To give you an idea of the game’s visual representation, they generated a mock-up using the Midjourney AI program, showcasing how Word Reef might appear on a mobile device.

AI has proven its capabilities in various aspects of game development, including conceptualization and visual design. While it may not have mastered certain games like Wordle yet, AI, specifically ChatGPT, has shown impressive performance when pitted against challenging final questions. In fact, ChatGPT outperformed human contestants in this regard, demonstrating its proficiency in the game. The advantage of AI in such competitions is that it doesn’t have a need for prize money, unlike human participants.

With AI’s demonstrated abilities in designing and playing games, the next question that arises is whether it can generate games that are truly enjoyable and engaging for human players.
