IPRdaily, a prominent global intellectual property technology media firm has recently published a report. According to the report, Qualcomm, Huawei and Ericsson are leading the way when it comes to wireless communication technology inventions. In actual fact, these three companies occupy the top three spot for the global wireless communication technology invention patents. The report also highlighted the important roles that these companies play in the field of wireless communication technology.

The report named the companies according to their respective global ranking. This ranking is based on the number of wireless communication invention patents that these companies have applied for. It also takes into consideration the number of patents that they have already published. Therefore, it considers both the application number and publication of patents. This offers insight into the level of technology innovations and the intellectual property development within the industry.

From IPRdaily’s report, Qualcomm unsurprisingly lead the way with 26,944 patents in the field of wireless network communication technology. Chinese telecommunications giant, Huawei follows closely with 20,136 invention patents. Ericsson also picks up the third spot with 11,500 invention patents. Samsung on the other hand could not make it to the top three. However, the company trails Ericsson by just 4 patents. There are other prominent companies that also made it to the list to complete the top ten. Such companies include OPPO, ZTE, Vivo, Xiaomi etc. One interesting fact about the list is that more Chinese firms seem to be contributing more each year. Checking from the top 100 rankings, you could see that 36 of these companies are all Chinese. Therefore, Chinese firms are well-recognized for their significant contributions to the global wireless communication technology.

Huawei has proven beyond reasonable doubt that it is not backing down anytime soon. Considering the series of sanctions placed on the company by the US government and its allies, making it to the top should have only been a daydream for the Chinese firm. However, the company beats the odds and stays ahead of the likes of Samsung and Ericsson by a mile.

For some years now, Huawei has invested heavily into research and developments. This has helped the company to introduce groundbreaking solutions that have contributed significantly to the evolution of the global network technology.

In 2022 alone, Huawei invested a total of $23.5 billion in research and development alone. This amount represented an increase of 13.2% year-on-year for the company’s R&D investment. It also represented 25.1% of Huawei’s total revenue for 2022.

In the annual report, Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou stated that the company aims to maintain strategic focus in R&D. Meng emphasized that the company aims to strengthen R&D investment in 2023. Considering the amount of money that Huawei is currently investing into R&D, it could leapfrog Qualcomm in the near future. If it keeps going at this pace, the Chinese tech firm can lead the world in terms global wireless communication invention patents.
