Snapdragon for Galaxy

When Samsung launched the Galaxy S23 series, it had an exclusive feature. The entire series came with a special edition chipset called Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy. It’s basically a custom chipset that performed better than the regular 8 Gen 2 SoC.

But now, phones have started to come out with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2 chipset. For example, the recently released Red Magic 8S Pro came with that chipset. And if you take a closer look into the plus version of the SoC, it’s basically the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy with a different name. Even Qualcomm has confirmed it!

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 comes has a codename SM8550 with the suffix “AB.” In other words, it comes with a SM8550-AB codename. On the other hand, Samsung’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has an SM8850-AC codename.

Interestingly, the codename of the Red Magic 8S Pro’s SoC reveals that the chipset is SM8550-AC. In other words, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2 is basically the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 that’s for Galaxy. Even the clock speed of the SoC is similar.

For both the SoC, the primary core comes with a 3.36 GHz clock frequency. Furthermore, both chipsets share the same GPU frequency of 719 MHz. Also, as mentioned earlier, Qualcomm has confirmed that the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 are the same.

Qualcomm says, “There are no specification differences between Samsung’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and this new variant of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with 3.36GHz peak CPU speeds.”

This really makes me wonder if the case will be the same for the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. But that will depend on whether Qualcomm and Samsung stick with their partnership for the Galaxy S24 series. So, we’ll need to wait and see.
