In a surprising twist, Huawei launched its Huawei Mate 60 Pro smartphone yesterday. Now, the company has just unveiled the second and, equally unexpected, Mate 60. The vanilla version shares most of its specifications with its Pro. However, there are some downgrades to remind us this is not the Pro version.
While there are significant changes, the Huawei Mate 60 still stands as a unique device in the market. Due to the US ban, Huawei had to invest a lot in building a powerful ecosystem for its smartphones. The phone runs with HarmonyOS which is Huawei’s own mobile operating system. Moreover, it packs the Kirin 9000S chipset and a lot of unique aspects that make this handset stand in the competitive market.
Huawei Mate 60 – Kirin 9000S, OLED Display, 50 MP camera and more
In terms of display, the Huawei Mate 60 comes with a 6.69-inch LTPO OLED screen with a 2,668 x 1,216 pixels resolution. The panel has up to 120 Hz refresh rate. The display also comes with a second-gen Kunlun glass ensuring extra protection. The panel has a top-centered punch-hole for the 13 MP ultrawide camera. It’s a notable downgrade over the Mate 60 Pro that has a surprising triple-camera combo at the front.
Gizchina News of the week
The Huawei Mate 60 also shares the design language of its Pro sibling. We have the same round camera island on the back. However, the phone differs with a 12 MP periscope camera with 5x optical zoom that replaces the 48 MP snapper on the Mate 60 Pro. The main camera is a 50 MP unit with f/1.4-f/4.0 variable aperture and 12 MP ultrawide module are carried over. The company ensures the quality with the XMAGE camera tweaks.
Huawei decided to not confirm the chipset, but it’s likely the same Kirin 9000S SoC inside of the Huawei Mate 60 Pro. The phone sells in a single 12 GB RAM and 512 GB Storage Configuration. Huawei did not disclose information about the Kirin 9000S, so we will have to wait for further tests to uncover the true power of this chipset.
One of the interesting features is the fact it runs with Harmony OS 4.0 software powered by Huawei Mobile Services. The phone draws its powers from a 4.750 mAh battery with 66W fast-charging. The vanilla also offers two-way BeiDou satellite messaging in China.
Pricing and Availability
The Mate 60 comes in the same color options as its Pro sibling. Buyers can opt for the Black, White, Green, and Purple paint jobs. The phone costs CNY 5,999 ($824), which is CNY 1,000 below the Huawei Mate 60 Pro. The handset is listed on Vmall with the shipments set for September 17. For now there is no word from Huawei regarding to a launch in global markets like Europe.
The Huawei Mate 60 is a very interesting flagship with unique features. We are eagerly waiting to get our hands at this device to test and find out if it’s a good competitor for modern flagships of 2023.
