Before the rise of smartphones, we had flip phones. Compact devices that had tiny screens and keyboards split between a mechanism. When not in use, you could easily fold your device and fit it in your pocket or bag. This kind of design conquered many fans across the world, and even today, has a decent adoption. With the rise of foldable smartphones with clamshell design, this kind of concept received a brand new life. Now, it’s the display that folds easily, and delivers the same feeling as an old-school flip phone. Paying homage to the legacy of flip handsets, Samsung decided to launch the limited edition Galaxy Z Flip5 Retro. The device specifically pays a tribute to the Samsung E700, one of Samsung’s most memorable flip handsets.
About Flip Phones
Flip phone history began when the clamshell style mobile phones were first introduced to the market in the 1990s. Initially designed to be more compact than the traditional “brick” cell phone, flip phones quickly became popular for their unique design and convenience and became a cultural icon of the late ’90s.
The introduction of the flip phone was a significant moment in the history of cell phones. Prior to the flip phone, mobile phones were bulky and often had external antennas. The flip phone design not only made the phone more compact, but it also allowed for more features to be added to the device. With the flip phone, manufacturers were able to incorporate cameras, color screens, and more. (Via).
