Significance of the Apple Watch Series 9 (RED)

The launch of the Apple Watch Series 9 (RED) is significant in the fight against HIV/AIDS. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 38 million people were living with HIV/AIDS in 2019, and 690,000 people died from AIDS-related illnesses. While there is no cure for HIV/AIDS, antiretroviral therapy (ART) can help people living with HIV to live longer and healthier lives.

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria provides funding for ART and other HIV/AIDS programs in sub-Saharan Africa, where the majority of people living with HIV/AIDS reside. The funds raised from the sale of the Apple Watch Series 9 (RED) will help to provide life-saving treatment and care to people living with HIV/AIDS.

On World AIDS Day this year, Apple once again highlights its long-term partnership with (RED). Over the past 17 years, Apple customers have helped raise more than $2.5 billion, empowering millions of people to get life-saving antiretroviral treatment and HIV testing. These funds also help HIV-positive mothers prevent passing the virus to their babies.

The (RED) Foundation, also known as Product Red, was founded by U2 lead singer Bono and Bobby Shriver of Debt AIDS Trade in Africa to raise funds for the global prevention and treatment of AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. RED mainly unites several companies, allowing partners to produce products with the “Product Red” trademark. It then earns income from these products and 1% of the partners’ profits will be donated to the foundation.
