Apple has rolled out a brand-new beta version of iOS 17. Called the iOS 17.3 beta, it’s currently available for developers. As always, this new beta version of the OS has showcased a good number of features. But among all, the Stolen Device Protection is the main highlight.
If you can recall, earlier this year, we saw a report on the rise of iPhone thefts in public areas such as bars. And the interesting fact was that they were even getting the passcode, which allowed them to easily reset the Apple ID password of the victim. It seems like Apple paid attention, which is likely why the beta iOS 17.3 has Stolen Device Protection.
At the core, the Stolen Device Protection feature aims to prevent theft problems. It limits what the thieves can do with the device after it gets stolen.
More About the Stolen Device Protection Feature
So, how can the feature actually help a stolen device return to its rightful owner? When someone opts for this protection, the device will ask the user to use Face ID or Touch ID when it’s outside of a familiar location. This location could be the workplace or home.

If the phone doesn’t get either, it will restrict the person from accessing the sensitive information. The person won’t be able to perform sensitive actions either. To illustrate, with the Stolen Device Protection on, the thieves won’t be able to view passkeys or passwords stored in the iCloud Keychain. They won’t be able to use payment settings or the Apple Card.
In addition, the Stolen Device Protection feature ensures that there’s a one-hour delay before an Apple ID password can be changed. Thanks to this, it becomes easier for the victim to report that their phone is missing and can get it locked.
Basically, Apple has thoughtfully created a two-tier system that offers the right level of security. It also prioritizes user-friendliness, which makes the Stolen Device Protection a great addition. You can read more about iOS 17.3 and the new features on this link.
