Sony CEO says PlayStation games will embrace PC, mobile and cloud in the future

As the world’s leading game console manufacturer, Sony occupies an unshakable position with the PlayStation 5 and its gaming business. PS5 sales have continued to climb since its launch in 2020, and the PlayStation division has been working to solidify its leadership position in gaming. However, no one, including CEO Kenichiro Yoshida, can give a definite answer as to how it will develop in the future. Recently, in an interview with Norges Bank Investment Management, Yoshida talked about his prospects for the future of PlayStation games in the short, medium and long term.

“Games will be everywhere,” Yoshida said. “Users will be able to seamlessly play their favourite games wherever and whenever there is computing power. PlayStation will remain our core product because we will extend gaming experiences to PC, mobile devices and the cloud.”

When asked about the trend of game subscription services, Yoshida affirmed its value but did not think it was a universal solution for all players.

“People typically only play one game at a time,” he said, “so an ‘all-you-can-eat’ multi-game subscription model may not be that great of a value compared to a video streaming service. So the PlayStation Network will offer a balanced or hybrid subscription service: both a subscription and a pay-per-content model .”

Finally, when asked how the recent acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft will affect the direction of PlayStation, Yoshida did not reveal much, only saying that Sony will continue to work hard to provide PlayStation members with the opportunity to play the best games.

Recognizing the value of game subscription services, he envisions a balanced model within the PlayStation Network, blending subscriptions with a pay-per-content approach. Addressing Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Yoshida underlines the importance of healthy competition, pledging Sony’s commitment to providing diverse gaming experiences. As the industry evolves, Sony remains dedicated to ensuring PlayStation’s prominence, embracing innovation while delivering top-tier games to its members.
