Gboard, the keyboard app from Google, is bringing a fresh and improved feature known as “Write in text fields” to the Pixel Tablet. Accompanying this enhancement is a revamped physical keyboard user interface (UI). This includes the addition of an Assistant voice typing toolbar, enhancing the overall typing experience.
How Gboard Assistant Voice Typing Works
When engaging in Assistant voice typing, users will notice a departure from the traditional full keyboard display. In its place, Gboard introduces a novel pill-shaped toolbar. Google asserts that this modification aims to optimize the user experience, allowing individuals to “see more of your screen when voice typing.”
The toolbar, positioned on the left side, offers a comprehensive menu with various options. It includes Settings, show voice commands, show clipboard, and Show translate. Following these choices is a convenient shortcut facilitating the swift opening of the emoji/expressive keyboard in a floating window. In the center of the toolbar, users will encounter instructional prompts, providing helpful cues. On the right side, there is a button for restoring the full keyboard and a microphone icon for initiating or ceasing speech-to-text functionality.

Users are granted the flexibility to relocate the toolbar to different locations, such as the left or right edge of their screens, where a vertical layout is presented.
Furthermore, the UI update ensures that text suggestions seamlessly appear inline next to the cursor. When the full keyboard is active, users can easily access the “Toolbar” button located adjacent to the voice microphone. This toolbar retains visibility when transitioning between various text fields, contributing to a smoother and more coherent typing experience.
Availability of Gboard Assistant Voice Typing
Currently, the introduced changes in Gboard are observable in version 13.7 (beta) on a Pixel Tablet running Android 14 QPR1 stable. However, these modifications have not yet been witnessed on the Pixel Fold. The future introduction of the Assistant voice typing toolbar to Pixel phones remains uncertain, although glimpses of a potential user interface update were discerned in the preceding year.
