In the December Feature Drop, Google Password Manager on Pixel devices introduced the capability to upgrade supported online accounts to passkeys. Google is collaborating with and showcasing several services that currently offer passkey upgrades.
Passkey on Google Pixel
When accessing the Google Password Manager on a Pixel device, users will find a “Simplify your sign-in” card situated between the Password Checkup tool and the list of credentials. Google provides information on how users can upgrade specific accounts to passkeys, eliminating the need to create or remember complex passwords. Moving forward, users can sign in using their face, fingerprint, or device PIN/pattern/password.
Google is actively working to expedite the adoption of passkeys and has forged partnerships with major entities, including Adobe, Best Buy, DocuSign, eBay, Kayak, Money Forward, Nintendo, PayPal, Uber, Yahoo! Japan, and soon, TikTok. It’s worth noting that TikTok had previously announced passkey support for iPhones last year. While any web service has the potential to support passkeys, Google’s efforts to bring aboard prominent names in the industry are particularly noteworthy.

For users with accounts on these early launch partners, the Google Password Manager on Pixel devices will provide helpful guidance, directing them to the specific location on the partner’s website or app where they can proceed to upgrade to a passkey. This user-friendly approach aims to simplify the transition to passkeys for a seamless and secure sign-in experience.
Passkey will Extend to Other Devices
The option for passkey upgrades through the Google Password Manager will extend to “other platforms in the future.” Presently, it is accessible on Pixel 5a and newer devices, Pixel Tablets, and Pixel Fold. Additionally, the Pixel Launcher has incorporated a Password Manager shortcut, providing easy access for users who do not utilize a homescreen icon or navigate through Settings > Passwords & accounts. These enhancements demonstrate Google’s commitment to advancing password security and accessibility across its devices.
