However, the mass production of these foldable iPhones is not anticipated until 2024 or 2025. The engineering team encountered challenges related to durability, particularly with the vulnerability of external displays to breakage. Despite aspirations for a slim design comparable to existing iPhones, hurdles such as limitations on battery size have impeded progress.

While discussions with Asian manufacturers have taken place to explore the potential of foldable iPhones in various sizes, the prospect of cancellation looms if the stringent design standards are not met. The primary challenge lies in achieving a thin, outward-facing screen design while simultaneously addressing practical component constraints.

Concurrently, Apple is also delving into the development of a foldable iPad, approximately the size of an iPad Mini. The goal is to mitigate the crease in the center of the display and engineer a flat hinge for a seamless user experience, as outlined in the report.

Initially placed on hold in 2020, the focus of the project shifted towards an inward-folding iPad featuring an eight-inch screen. This approach aimed to relax the durability requirements compared to a phone. Nevertheless, Apple appears committed to resolving issues such as creasing and achieving a flat screen for user interaction. Even though the success of these endeavors remains uncertain.

Despite continuous efforts, the launch of a foldable iPhone or iPad is not imminent, deferring expectations that initially suggested a 2024 release. Reports also indicate that E-Ink technology testing for foldables has been underway, further emphasizing Apple’s commitment to refining and perfecting their foldable devices before bringing them to the market.
