Tecno Pocket Go Gaming Handheld lets you play AR games on the move

Tecno Pocket Go

The gaming handheld market is becoming pretty interesting. Since the release of the Valve Steam Deck, we’ve seen great options from multiple big-name and small-name brands. And there are a good number of handhelds that have their unique take on the design. Among them is the Tecno Pocket Go.

While most gaming handhelds come with a screen, the Tecno Pocket Go is just a controller that packs all the gaming hardware inside. Instead of a screen, the handheld gaming device comes with a pair of AR glasses, which may not seem like an advantage, but it is. As for the specs, it’s no less than the current flagships, meaning that you should be able to play pretty much all the games on it.

More About Tecno Pocket Go Gaming Handheld

So, there’s a lot to talk about, as Tecno Pocket Go is packed with features. But among all, here are the main highlights:

The Smallest AR Focused Gaming Handheld

As Tecno claims, the Pocket Go is the smallest AR gaming handheld device on the market. While that claim can’t be contested as the company hasn’t provided the dimension details yet, the design of the device is surely interesting.

While most of the gaming handhelds come with a small screen, the Pocket Go doesn’t have any screen at all. Instead, it bundles with a pair of AR glass. With that, you can get a screen that’s similar to a 215-inch screen placed 6 meters away from you.

As for the AR glasses, they bring two 0.71-inch micro OLED displays, which the company says can offer great visuals. Considering the size of the screen the glasses offer, it will be pretty much like playing games on a movie theatre screen. And with that, the Pocket Go can take immersive gaming to the next level.

6D Gaming experience

Wondering how the gaming experience will be on the gaming handheld? As Tecno describes, the AR glasses with the refined controller of Pocket Go deliver 6D gaming. It packs the Vision Track, Sensory Sync, and realistic vibrations. The company has let people experience the handheld at MWC 2024, and the overall response was quite good.

Powerful Hardware of Tecno Pocket Go

Under the hood, Tecno Pocket Go comes with one of the latest AMD Hawk Point CPUs. More specifically, the gaming handheld packs an AMD Ryzen 7 8840HS, which brings 8 cores and 16 threads. With a turbo frequency of up to 5.1 GHz and the Radeon 780M iGPU, the APU can handle most games that you throw at it.

CPU RAM and Storage of Tecno Pocket Go

But it’s not just the AMD APU that makes the Tecno Pocket Go a capable gaming handheld. It also packs 16 GB of LPPDR5 RAM, which is combined with 1 TB of PCIe 4.0 SSD. This combination makes the handheld capable of handling resource-intensive games and apps with ease.

Tecno has also integrated a capable cooling system to ensure stable performance. To be specific, the Pocket Go gaming handheld has three copper pipes, which make direct contact with the AMD APU. This cooling system makes the system capable of delivering 35 watts of performance.

Reliable Battery Life for Non-stop Gaming

Another factor where the Tecno Pocket Go shines is in terms of the battery life. First of all, the handheld has a good cooling setup, which will ensure that the internals can run cool and not draw more power than they should.

Next is the fact that the Pocket Go gaming handheld comes with a 50 Wh battery. To compare, the Steam Deck and Asus ROG Ally come with a 40 Wh battery. But it’s not just about having a better Wh rating. Tecno has adopted a design that allows you to swap out the battery when it runs out of charge.

But you should note that Tecno hasn’t offered any details on whether the battery swapping system is a hot-swap. If not, gamers will likely need to save their game’s progress, turn the device off, and then swap out the battery. Even if that’s the case, it’s a good thing that the gaming handheld allows easy replacing of the battery.

Other Details, Pricing, and Availability of Tecno Pocket Go

There are some aspects that Tecno hasn’t shared much detail on. Among them is info on the connectivity ports. There’s no official spec sheet for Pocket Go yet, but from the demo at MWC 2024, it seems like there will be at least two USB Type-C ports and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

Next is pricing, which the company hasn’t said anything about. But it’s worth noting that the recent gaming handhelds are launching in the $700 to $800 range. Lastly, we don’t know when the Pocket Go will be available to purchase. But as Tecno has already demoed the products, these unconfirmed details should soon surface.
