In a move to streamline document management, Google’s Files by Google app has gained a new document scanning feature. This eliminates the need to switch between apps for capturing physical documents and integrating them into your digital workflow.
Files by Google Now Lets You Scan Documents Directly Within the App
Accessing the scanner is straightforward. Simply open the Files by Google app and locate the new scan button prominently placed on the homepage. Clicking this button launches your device’s camera with a clear frame to guide document placement. The app offers two capture modes: manual and auto. Manual capture allows you to take the picture yourself, while auto-capture detects the document and automatically snaps a picture for added convenience.

Beyond capturing single pages, Files by Google’s scanner caters to multi-page documents. You can seamlessly capture multiple pages and organize them into a single PDF file. After capturing, editing options are available to fine-tune the scanned document. These options include cropping and rotating for precise framing. Applying filters to enhance readability, and a cleaning function to improve image quality. Once satisfied, you can save the scanned document in a dedicated “Scanned” folder within the Files by Google app. Ensuring all your scans are organized in a central location.
This functionality complements the existing document scanning feature within the Google Drive app, offering Android users more choice in their preferred workflow. Interestingly, some reports suggested initial availability on Pixel devices, but the feature appears to be rolling out more broadly through a server-side update. This wider availability ensures a larger pool of Android users can benefit from the convenience of in-app document scanning.
So, by integrating document scanning directly into Files by Google, Google is providing users with a more unified and efficient way to manage their physical and digital documents. This update streamlines the process of capturing and organizing important papers, making it easier to keep them readily accessible within the familiar Files by Google interface.
