Over the years, many aspects of Pixel phones have evolved, but one fundamental element of their design has remained consistent. Recently, Google has filed a US trademark for this particular design feature.
When you compare the 2016 Pixel and Pixel XL with the 2023 Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, it’s hard to believe they belong to the same product line. This stark contrast in design evolution is similar to what you’d observe when comparing the first iPhone to the iPhone 15.
Google Trademarks the “G” Logo on the Pixel Devices
Throughout the various changes in the shape, size, and camera bumps of Pixel phones, one constant has remained: the presence of the “G” logo on the rear. Similar to the iconic Apple logo found on iPhones and MacBooks, all Pixel devices, including phones, tablets, and laptops, since 2016 have featured Google’s stylized “G” on their backsides. Even Google’s official cases often showcase this logo in the same spot, ensuring it remains visible.

As expected, it appears that Google has no plans to deviate from its iconic “G” logo on its phones anytime soon. Recently, the company has filed for a trademark for the Pixel’s “G” design in the US. The accompanying paperwork explicitly states that the outline represents a generic device, resembling the Pixel 8, and illustrates where the “G” logo would typically be positioned.
Google “G” Logo Trademark Applies to Only Pixel Smartphones
It’s worth noting that the trademark specifically applies to the use of the “G” logo on smartphones and does not extend to other devices such as tablets or laptops. Despite the absence of new Pixelbooks in the past five years, with several cancellations along the way, there are indications of a potential Pixel Tablet 2 currently under development.
On the phone front, initial renders of the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro have already surfaced. Rumor has it that both models are going to feature the same iconic “G” logo, despite changes in the camera bump design from a bar to a pill shape once again.
