Edifier has launched a new wireless headset in China. Called the Edifier STAX SPIRIT S5, the wireless headphones come equipped with Qualcomm QCC518, which is a flagship chipset. On top of that, there’s Hi-Res Audio Wireless certification.
All that, plus the other flagship features, make the Edifier STAX SPIRIT S5 stand as proper flagship wireless headphones. That also means that the price is on the expensive side. To be specific, the launch price in China at CNY 2,980. That converts to around $412, making the headset compete against the high-end Sony WH-1000XM5 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones.
All the High-end Features of Edifier STAX SPIRIT S5
There are a good number of features that make the Edifier STAX SPIRIT S5 worth the asking price. Among them are:
Planar Magnetic Drivers
The Edifier STAX SPIRIT S5 wireless headphones pack planar magnetic drivers. These bring a larger driving area than traditional diaphragms. This results in lower distortion, good transient response, and a wider frequency range. Plus, the ultra-thin diaphragm has a base material that’s only 2 μm thick.
Combined with the 2nd Gen EqualMassTM patented wiring technology, the new STAX SPIRIT S5 enjoy improved acoustics. All these make the wireless headphones deliver excellent details and a superior listening experience.
Then, there’s the patented Flux magnetic circuit array design. This combines the flux mapping to the steel precisely to offer a uniform magnetic field intensity. It also maximizes the utilization of flux, offering a wider soundstage.
Premium Build Quality of the Edifier STAX SPIRIT S5
Edifier didn’t skimp on the build quality. The STAX SPIRIT S5 headphones use cowhide earmuffs. That, combined with a pressure-reducing headband pad, makes the headset deliver a comfortable fit. There’s also a rotating shaft, which ensures a secure fit.

Top-of-the Line Qualcomm QCC5181 flagship chip
Another big highlight of the Edifier STAX SPIRIT S5 is the Qualcomm QC5181. It’s a flagship chipset that brings support for Bluetooth 5.4. Most importantly, the chip supports Snapdragon Sound. For those wondering, it is a sound platform that promises to deliver excellent listening experiences.
That’s not all! The Qualcomm QC5181 makes the STAX SPIRIT S5 enjoy 89 ms low latency and aptX Voice ultra-wideband voice tech. As Qualcomm says, it can offer a 32 kHz voice experience. Edifier tops that out with a dual microphone setup and advanced noise cancellation. These deliver an even better calling experience.
High-end Codec Support of Edifier STAX SPIRIT S5
The STAX SPIRIT S5 wireless headphones support all the codecs under the Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound system. That includes aptX Adaptive, aptX HD, and aptX Lossless. You also get two major codecs: LHDC and LDAC. Edifier says that the transmission throughput is at 1.2 Mbps.
It’s worth noting that the STAX SPIRIT S5 has two gold label certifications. They are Hi-Res and Hi-Res wireless. These two certifications make the wireless headset stand strong against the competition.
Other Highlights of Headphones
Besides offering a great audio experience, the Edifier STAX SPIRIT S5 delivers a reliable battery life. It comes with a 1500 mAh battery that can offer a total of 80 hours of runtime. Edifier offers two audio cables, AUX and USB-C, for hassle-free wired listening.
Besides, there’s an audiophile mode. This mode allows you to personalize the EQ of the STAX SPIRIT S5 and switch between 3 studio-level EQ sound effects.
This is the first and only article about this. 40 days later there is nothing else. How come?
89ms latency is very high, I am guessing this was with a poor BT codec like ldac or aptx hd, hopefully the latency is far lower with hi res wireless codec like 20-30ms.
