The new “Presto within Apple” system allows employees to wirelessly update iPhone software directly within sealed boxes. This eliminates the need for customers to perform updates after initial setup.

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg first reported on this innovation in October 2023. Internal testing began in select Apple Stores later that year, with a wider rollout planned for April 2024. By early summer, all U.S. stores are expected to adopt the Presto system.

The technology utilizes a specialized pad, described as resembling a metal box. This device leverages MagSafe and other wireless functionalities to activate the iPhone even while sealed within its packaging. Once powered on, the system downloads and installs the latest iOS version before powering the phone back down.

This streamlined approach offers several benefits. Firstly, it enhances customer convenience by eliminating the initial software update step for new iPhone owners. Secondly, it allows Apple Stores to pre-load devices with the newest software, ensuring customers receive the latest security patches and features immediately upon purchase.

The Presto system reflects Apple‘s commitment to a seamless user experience. By automating software updates within the retail environment, Apple streamlines the setup process and ensures customers have access to the most up-to-date software from the moment they walk out of the store.
